Fido Goes Northeast

I hit the pavement from Spearfish and blasted through South Dakota(sunflowers) Minnesota (hot,humid,BUGS)and Wisconsin towards the UP of Michigan. Trying to get to cooler weather. Am currently hanging out in the Chequamegon National Forest. Fido is happy to be back on dirt roads!

Sounds like a great trip so far and it's only going to get better, Newfoundland is fabulous, keep posting they are great

Spent the last couple of days tooling around on dirt roads in northern Wisconsin. Found my own private lake 20 miles from pavement. Just the way I like it. Horseshoe Lake, Chequamegon National Forest, Wisconsin

Fido managed to find some mud along the way. As usual he didn’t disappoint.

Heading into Michigan for some Lake Superior beaches today.

Spent more time in Wisconsin fitting a seven foot wide Fido through three foot wide holes.... this is why we can’t have nice things!

I bid farewell to Wisconsin and turned towards the Porcupine Mountain State Park in Michigan. Got up early this morning before the crowds and spotted four otters frollicking on the shore. Great way to start the day! Of course I left the real camera in the car and missed the photo op so you’ll just have to take my word for it.

The UP of Michigan is awesome! I managed to log a significant amount of dirt road miles over the last few days.
I crossed the border from Wisconsin and stopped in Ishpeming for breakfast in honor of a friend who had roots there who had recently passed away. I see why she liked it. Lovely architecture and friendly people. I picked up a sweet set of vintage magnesium Tosco binoculars in antique store there for $20. Would have bought half the store if weren’t so far from home! The proprietor of the store was super friendly. As he put it. “ I am very well travelled and the three places where people are the friendliest are Newfoundland, Louisiana, and Ishpeming”. I asked if he had ever been to the Punjab in India. He said no., and I told him it was in the running. From there I headed to the porcupine mountains. One of only two nights out of twenty on the road so far that I have paid for camping. It was lovely though......

I ran into civilization two days ago. I was headed to pictured rocks state park and when I arrived it was completely booked. I returned to Fido I the parking lot and decided to ride my bike to the nearby forest service office for free camping recommendations.

Luckily, there were some very nice overlanders in the lot next to Fido rocking a sweet dodge power wagon(new) with a four wheel camper on the back. They shared the coordinates of a lovely free spot on Lake Superior (unheard of) and I returned the favor for the direction they were headed.

The next morning I awoke and went for a dip before hitting the road. The goal for the day was the shipwreck museum at whitefish (long live the Edmund Fitzgerald) followed by the Hiawatha national forest. As I cruised along at 50 mph on the dirt road I saw enticing signs for a lighthouse to the north. I had already gone 200 Mom leales on this tank of fuel and was in the middle of nowhere. The great thing about Fido is that the large tank gives a 500 mile range and you can be spontaneous when you are in the middle of nowhere. So I took a hard left and 25 miles later was rewarded with an awesome free lighthouse tour.(which was way better than whitefish as it turned out.)

Just spent a great 4 days at Bayview on Lake Michigan. Airbnb was an old schoolhouse right on the water and met up w good friends for good times. Great vacation from my vacation!

Headed into Canada today. Going to take the northern route to bypass all the big cities. Likely will be out of cell range most of the time so posts will be infrequent. Meeting up w Adventureprise in his Earthcruiser in a week for the duration of the trip to Neufoundland. Looking forward to some company!
