FG adventures in Africa (photo thread)

I thought it well to start a photo thread of our FG trips in Southern Africa in order to keep inspiring myself, and perhaps others with similar dreams.

I hope to continue adding new photo adventures to this thread over the years.

Here are the first bunch of photos taken this past weekend near the Greyton area in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

SAvenues.com say this about Greyton:

The peaceful little hamlet of Greyton lies surrounded by the Riviersonderend (river without end) mountains and farmlands some 90 minutes from Cape Town. Greyton is fast earning the reputation as a perfect weekend getaway.

Essentially lost in time Greyton, named after Sir George Grey, twice Governor of the Cape, is a picture-perfect rendition of an old town with its gravel roads, thatched roof cottages, pretty little gardens and beautifully restored buildings. The people of Greyton are friendly and the route into the village of Greyton along the R406 as it wends its way through the emerald hills and fields of wheat, barley oats and lucerne of the Cape Overberg, a most pleasurable drive. The sun always seems to shine in this part of the world and the oak-lined streets of Greyton, where ducks cavort in the canals and donkey carts clatter, are as much a way of life as the many outdoor activities.

The historical buildings of the Post House, St Andrews Church, the Smouswinkel and a number of others, are worth the visit alone and, for Capetonians especially, Greyton has become an antique and craft hunters' delight with everything from bygone treasures to pottery.

This photo was taken in the Karoo, central South Africa.

PS. I have a black and a white FG and recently swopped the camper body from the black to the white one, thus the sudden color change from black to white.

A-framing the Jimny!

This is how we travel at times. Especially when camping with the kids over school holidays. Then we have the Jimny with us as a little runabout and 4x4 trail explorer.

Just a couple of photos from a recent road trip, 2,800km of tarmac, to get a modification done to my rear airbags by the only people I trust. Unfortuanately they are 1,400km far away from my location.

Filling up, for the umpteenth time:

Cooling down on route for an afternoon nap (it is slow going at 45mph - 60mph):

Passing by the father-in-law's birth town in the middle of nowhere South Africa:

A couple of photos from a recent camping trip to a location just outside Montaqu in the Western Cape.

SAvenues.com says this about Montaqu:

Lying between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn on Route 62 - South Africa's version of America's Route 66 blessed with scenery to take your breath away, some of the country's finest wines and advertised as the longest wine route in the world - is the wine-producing town of Montagu.

Known as the ‘mountain mecca' of the Cape, Montagu lies surrounded by the Langeberg mountain range nestled between the Keisie and Kingna Rivers in the western corner of Kannaland, and is famous for her orchards, vineyards, local herbs, rock formations and healing hot mineral springs.

Montagu is one of the best examples of a late Victorian agricultural village in the Western Cape with a number of examples of preserved Cape Dutch and Georgian National Monuments - Long Street houses 14 of the town's 22 national monuments and Joubert House epitomises late 19th century living.

My two photos below are more about the camper than the location.

Does it get hot now during summer?

More of a pond right now, we have serious water shortage in the Western Cape province at the moment.

And temperature wise very much so Bris31, but nothing you guys cannot handle.

Typically early to mid 30's Celcius but this year we had an official heatwave whilst over there and had a couple of days close to 40 Celcius.

In Australia this year is summer meltdown in the south usually reaching about 40C (104F), though Brisbane is performing better so far.

Namibia June/July 2018!

So we finally managed some time off and took "Vlakvark" (Warthog in English), our aptly named FG, up and around Namibia.

We did just over 5,000km (approx 3,125 miles) over 26x days.

A good 2,500km (1,500+ miles) of this distance was done on various grades of gravel and sand roads.

Here are some photos and road descriptions for those who may plan on visiting Namibia, South West Africa (click to enlarge):
