Falken Wildpeak AT/3W - anyone running them? Opinions?

Falken now offers its A/TW3 in a 12ply F rating. E has been fine for my 10,500lb van but curious if anyone has run and F and can compare to an E with regard to a harsher ride.

I installed the AT3W XL load range on our patriot. They are an awesome tire for lightweight rigs. They are like 3 lbs lighter than the Kumho AT51s I removed. I have about 1000kms on them so far and they are great on road. I am sure they will be fine in the back country too.

Story of woe here about Falkens:

I purchased a 2008 LR3 recently that came with a complimentary wobble at 50-70mph. Not a small wobble either. Previous owner never figured it out despite efforts so I set in on it. I first went to Les Schwab for balancing, they corrected by 2oz. Did not road force balance though. Full servicing and inspection of the truck eliminated the possibility of issues with steering, rotors, brakes, wheels. Took it to another specialist with fancy road force testing equipment and three of the tires are defective, with one having such a prominent defect that it creates 20lbs of force at speed, a near dangerous level of out-of-balanceness (new phrase?) I was told. It was explained to me that the steel cables that are layered in each ply of rubber bunched up, which makes a knot that then turns into a big old lump at highway speeds and wobbles the steering so severely that if left alone it will start to damage and loosen other vehicle components.

I was told by a Falken rep that these are out of warranty and that they will only work with the original purchaser and only within the first 2/32s of tread wear. They were purchased by the previous owner in late 2020 and have less than 10000 miles of use on them. I would like Falken to stand by their product but I don’t expect that to happen.

I had a set of these AT3Ws on my prior vehicle and was less than impressed. They did well on road in most conditions, though I never saw heavy snow or severe ice or even hard rain in the 9 months I had them prior to selling my truck. They performed poorly off-road in mud and scree. They lack the kind of tread blocks that create better bite and the pattern on the shoulders and sidewall is meek and adds nothing. Real loss there. I know that you might say they aren’t mud tires but I do expect some performance in mud out of an “all terrain”, even if it is not as strong in mud as a mud terrain. These Falkens were awful. The 31” Wrangler Duratrecs that came stock on my old truck outperformed by far these Falkens. And to add annoyance to injury, more and more manufacturers are adding noise reduction and rock ejecting lips and angles between and on tread blocks. Not Falken. These tires absolutely consume rocks and every time I go off road I listen to the agitating sound of clicking from my tires when I’m back on pavement due to the dozen or two rocks that are wedged in between the tread blocks.

I will give them credit for their rubber/silica compound, it is sticky and creates decent traction without much road noise, but this is supposed to be an “all terrain” tire and it is lacking in too many ways in that department. Add to that this quality control issue I’ve inherited and I’ll never purchase or recommend Falkens again. I’m probably not done lobbying to their customer service department, so on the off chance that they reclaim their defective tires I’ll post an update.

We have the exact opposite experience with the AT3W on both my Patriot and on my friends LJ. His jeep trucks through muddy conditions without issue. I have seen way to many duratracs with side wall blow outs to even put them on my wheelbarrow. I did notice one of my wheels had way more weight than the other three, but I will count that towards my installers balancing machine. I am getting them rebalanced and we will see then.

My brother in law has a Chevy Colorado. Two years ago he installed a set of Falkans along with suspension upgrade and complete alignment. Less than 20,000 miles later they were cupping. Alignment was checked and tires rotated. Last month they would not pass inspection. He switched to General ATXs on my recommendation. My ATXs have 50,000 miles on em with another 15-20k to go. My switching to Generals wasn’t easy as I’d been a fan of BFG since the launch of their very first AT decades ago.

Been around a year now with the Falkens and overall I've been happy, less noisy then the duratracs they replaced and seem on par in winter(truck now has a rear locker so that may be the helping factor) but would buy them again!

I'm still having their performance. This is the second set I have ran. At 12,000 miles and used roughly 1/8" on our F250. I don't feel like that's too bad for 8800 lbs truck that sees a decent amount of dirt. Out Tundra was 1000lbs lighter and they seemed better suited to that weight. I may try something else next time just to change it up.

All 8 I purchased were made in Thailand. I don't know if it's true but I heard they have three different factories. Maybe thee are some consistency issues.
