My 1995 D1 had 275,000 miles on it when I sold it to the next owner who continued to drive it. Never had to replace head gaskets, did swap the 5sp for an autobox when I somehow blew out 5th gear. I'm hoping the LR3 can achieve this too. Preventive maintenance is the key .....

Did some trailer testing last weekend. Ended up being a Range Rover test with the trailer pummeling over everything behind me haha. More photos to come later!

Well, I bought an aftermarket extended warranty just before the 50,000 mile and 4 year time for about $4500 including 9.5% WA tax. This summer I went well over the invested cost with a rear differential replacement and wheel bearing. It only turned 90,000 last week..... Previous replaced parts during last 2.5 years/40,000 miles: radiator, some hvac compressor or pump (ac stopped working), shifter unit (wouldn't shift into gear anymore), rear air strut, suspension compressor, some other things I can't recall.

So, it's never been on a flatbed or tow truck. However, this is proving to be just like my 1996 Discovery. It never let me down but it had nearly everything under the body replaced during 225,000 miles. Costs of repairs have been far more than the purchase price of the 96 which was bought used with only 25,000 miles. I'll get back to you on that figure because I'm thinking it's close to double with most of the work being at Flying Circus in Durham NC and some being in Bellevue WA at two rover specialists.

Doesn't it seem like a Land Cruiser would be just maintenance, not replacement of so many parts? :(

Hi Chris,

I'll be up in Telluride for about 9 days starting this Saturday. Let me know if you or anyone else is around, and we could arrange for a fun trip on a few trails in the area. We'll be doing some 4x4, some moto riding, hiking, general enjoyment of the area, maybe even a day trip over to Moab to run Long/Pucker Canyon or part of the Shaeffer trail/Potash road and some hiking in the San Juans. If you're around...shoot me a PM and we'll see if we can meet up for drinks or RRS fun (Imogene, Black Bear or Alpine Loop).

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for the invite! My plan was to be there this weekend but some poor timing has resulted in a scratched weekend in favor of a trailer review... Maybe I should haul it up your way ;)

HA HA...not a bad idea...I'll be towing a smaller trailer with the Moto Guzzi on it, but not an adventure trailer! But if you could drive it up there for me, I'd be glad to put it to the test at Alta Lakes!

Our lead engineer Christian had a similar experience with an L322. After spending over CDN $2000 on an EAS repair with a dealer, he came out the morning he was planning to go on vacation with his RR to find the front extended all the way and the rear on the bump stops (funny looking pic). He later repaired the RR correctly for a fraction of the cost.

These experiences are what lead to the development and sale of the IIDTool. I appreciate the fact that you pay for the brand and that all manufacturers do this and they deserve it - to a certain extent. Charging over €2500 for a repair that should have cost ~1/10th of that is simply bending your customers over.

.

Steve, where in the US can I purchase the IID Tool? I have a feeling that my compressor has failed for the 3rd time and before I spend either $1400.00 on a new compressor again, or a 200 mile round trip to the local Independent LR Shop just to find out exactly what is wrong, I'd like to purchase the IID Tool. Any suggestions would be great. My suspension fault like has come back to life and goes from yellow to red and has been for 3 days now. Luckily I work from home, but my trip to Telluride this weekend just got squashed because of this.

Got mine from Lucky8, but they are available from a number of people in the states.

Timmelman,

The AMK compressor should only cost you $700, no way you should be paying 1400, unless you are getting charged about 5 hours of labor on top of the parts.

One good thing to investigate, if you join your local Land Rover Club, you should be getting cost discounts on parts.

On a side note...have been having tons of fun here in Telluride, Ouray and Silverton, and after running Imogene Pass yesterday, dropped in for lunch in Ouray and then a bit of time in Silverton, we ran into the whole Great Divide Expedition coming into town (Tom Collins, Jim West and crew) driving the new FFRR on the remake of the Great Divide tour. Perfect timing as alwaysm, capped off with a fun rainy run over Ophir Pass back to Telluride for the evening. The whole crew will be arriving here tonight as well...may get some more shots to share!

Have fun guys...off to Gateway today on the Moto Guzzi - riding 2 up on the twisties!

Hey Paul, my plans were to roll into Telluride tomorrow and do just what you did with my sport and a fellow 4Runner. But I can't take the chance of a failure way out on the trail somewhere, so I'm limping to Jackson WY for the weekend instead and doing the family thing. As for the compressor, funny thing is the Indie Shop I go to is the owned by a member of the Solihull Society and his wife is the event coordinator, I should ask about the discount. My mechanic said the compressor is a new version of the Hitachi & runs $900 plus labor for the new modifications and I'm not keen enough to get into that myself. However I will look into the AMK compressor. Sadly, I had a 12K warranty on the current failed part and just went past that mark last week driving home from California. Have fun and maybe next year.
