Excursion Sliders

I have been wanting to build a set of these for about a year. Just hadn't got around to it. I am planning an upcoming trip to Big Bend in the spring so that spark a little fire under my @ss to start getting some stuff done on the truck.

The last time I really had a big push was about a year and a half ago when we spent a week up on the trails around Ouray. Since then work kinda stopped. I have a bumper replacement that needed to go on, needed to build some sliders, have a rear bumper to make, some interior stuff I want to do. Oh and build a trailer.

Forgot to take pics of the bumper before I sent it off to be powdercoated. I put a receiver hitch in it, some shackle mounts one it, frenched some fog lights into it and got it setup for 3 Lightforce 240s. I'll post it later this week when I drop off the sliders to be powdercoated.

So the sliders. Same thing as everyone has seen before. 2x2x3/16 sq tubing with 1-3/4x.120 DOM for the kickouts.
I was going to go with 1/4DOM but it was double the price.
I figure there is more chance of coming down on the 2x2sq than the kickouts so I cheaped out and went with .120wall DOM.

I put 1/4" plate welded to the main slider so that it will mount to the existing holes on the pinch welds of the rocker.
It mainly helped me in mounting and holding the slider in place while I cut to fit everything else. Doubt it will provide much rigidity.

They will weld to the frame.
I hate drilling holes in the frame, none of my drill bits are sharp enough to quickly cut thru the frame.
The last time I drilled holes in it it took a hell of a long time to do. I can weld much faster.

I had everything for the sliders laying around on the rack except for the tubing. Had it bent over at Krawltex.
Btwn the kickout supports will be diamond plate pieces. I wanted to have it open, but my 4yr still has to use the steps to get in and out.
I don't want his leg going thru the steps and breaking or something bad.
I liked the clean look, but just couldn't do it. I have some LED lights that will go on each end to light up the steps similar to the OEM plastic steps.

They're big pigs, not sure about weight but I am guessing at least 60lbs a piece.
Shrockworks has a similar set that comes in around there. What's 120lbs when my rig weighs in over 9200lbs?

The Ex has a miserable breakover angle, I hope these give me some relief when I hit again. The last time I bent my OEM running boards. The new ones are mounted 2 inches higher that stock, so I gained a little clearance there. I'll post up the final product after I get them back from the powdercoater. Yes, they are sliders and powdercoating is probably useless, but I am getting it done for free and can touch up the paint with a rattle can when needed.

^^^x2, you'll get better penetration and welds without the impurities. But It'll probably be ok. Just a good thing to think about for next time:) Nice sliders thou, they'll look nice on that rig!:ylsmoke:

Hey Tree, I cant wait to see the finished product mounted on your truck. It seems like you are quite talented in the fabrication of sliders. It will be great to see your bumper too. Cheers on a job well done!:victory:

You didn't bother to clean up that square tubing before welding to it?

LOL, yah it was a little dirty but I hit it the contact spots with a 3M Roloc bristle to dust off the oxidation not as good as grinding down to shiny bare but it was penetrating plenty on the sq tubing. I wasn't going to clean the entire square tubing since it's all going to be sandblasted anyways.

nice sliders. i lol'd when i read cheaping out with 1.75x.120w DOM, because that's pretty stout stuff... then i remembered it's going on an Excursion. still plenty strong, i imagine.

any pics of the truck?

Finally got them up and mounted. Took a while to get em powdercoated. But when it's free you can't complain too much. He did a great job.

Here's the bumper. It used to be a wreck. Rusted and paint chipping. I did a little work on it. removed a tube, frenched some holes for a pair of Lexus yellow fogs, put in a receiver hitch and added some shackle brackets.

The 4 Hellas will be replaced with 3 LF 240s when funding allows. Hopefully this week some time I can get a bracket made for a winch to go into the bottom.

Those ugly looking sliders didn't turn out too bad

Put some grip tape on for time being. I am gonna add some treadplate soon so my kiddo's feet don't go thru the steps. I added some LED step lights last night.

The bumper getting blasted. Took about 5 times blasting it. But it came out great considering the condition before. Not bad for something I paid $175 for.

Anyways, still have a rear bumper to make, paint the ugly gold trim to textured black and a few other things. More to come.

There's a lot of room next to the frame for stuff, air tanks, compressor etc. Just make sure you have everything planned out before stuffing sliders under. I had an air tank to work around on one side. Almost did a water tank on the other side but went a different route. With 6" of lift you shouldn't have too much to worry about :ylsmoke: I am only running F350 springs and 285s. About 2.5"s of lift over stock. Trying to keep it low.

Very Nice!! I just talked about adding sliders to my Ex tonight.
