E350 Econoline front door limiting straps.

I’ve recently learned that E-Series vans have a major weakness in the door hinge area. It’s not likely to become a problem on a low mileage van... but on my 23 year old Ambo, it is becoming one.

The doors sheet metal isn’t robust enough to not fatigue over time. In this case, it was pushed past it’s limits when a strong wind gust caught the door and it slipped from my hand. With some careful use of a pry-bar, I’ve straightened the door enough to be able to open and close the door.

My repair plan involves two parts:
1) create and install limiting straps to prevent over extending the door.

2) my good friend Mr Miller is going to help repair the cracks and maybe even make the area stronger.

Here are some pics of another members rig.

I don’t want to reinvent the wheel, but I’msomewhat concerned that the strap could become a problem with the ebrake.

Anyone else has strap pics the could post? Comments?

Luckily it’s only the door... I’ll patch it up and get more years out of it.
The A pillar is also known to crack where the hinges attach. It’d be much harder to replace the A pillar.

I can measure and post pics tomorrow if that will help.
It would, I want to be sure they don’t interfere with the ebrake pedal. I can use my own reasoning... but Crestline has far more real world experience.

Mine don't interfere at all. I'll see if I can get you some pics. (I'm out of town for now)...

Not a great pic but the top of the bracket is about an inch below the bottom of the hood release handle.

Lol

As I said, they all look very similar! Those 2 pics are from my 2008 but pretty sure they are very similar on my 2001...
