Custom Netbook Topo GPS system

Just off hand I think it was about like this:

$400 Asus Eee 1000 with 40gb Solid State Drive
$65 Holux GPS slave unit.
$30 Logitec Trackball
$25 Custom "keyboard" that consists of "Cntrl" "G" and "T" keys.
$100 NatGeo Topo software
$50 ASUS brand car charger

My time to make the mount and figure it all out in the garage: Priceless

I'm sure you could save money on some of those items or use stuff you had around. I had most of it on hand and just added the ASUS and mount.

I would use a 8.9 screen if I did it again since it's pretty close to you face in that location.

Hmm...lots more appealing than the cost of a lowrance unit, that's for sure. Especially since I already have the topo stuff...hmm.

This is bad. I'll need a dedicated GPS/nav comp, and a dedicated comms comp.

Just found this thread. I like the "out of the box" thinking, but holy pig, typing on that thing must be a chore :coffeedrink:

Looks good.

I never need to use the keyboard when it's up there. I just use the track ball and turn on/off the tracking as needed.
