I have a 2003 frontier with the vg33e. I'm putting in some new exhaust manifold gaskets and I was looking at my pre cats and they looked good at first glance but then I started to look at the edges and you can see where some has broken off. should I be worried about this and replace them or should I bite the bullet and replace them along with new o2 sensors?

That doesn't look clogged or particularly damaged to me. Could almost just be some ash or oxidation around the edges. I'd probably leave it until there's some indication the cats aren't working properly anymore.

I would leave them alone unless the brick is rattling around inside the casing. If that happens, it won't be long before they break up which can lead to problems like clogging. Your ECU will tell you if they stop working well with a P0420 code. Worth noting is that cats are under federal law and removing a functioning cat is illegal.
