Agreed.............Chile is awesome. It's got everything that I'd ever want. I went there twice to climb these peaks.......Aconcagua (22,841') and Tupungato (21,490'). Then a third time I met Vic Hanson (member on this site) in Peru and we took his van and traveled for nearly 2 months in Peru, Chile, and Bolivia climbing peaks.

72 countries, sort of

Great thread, I haven't tallied this list up in quite some time...

We have a long-running battle in my extended family about our country lists.

My rule is that you have to either spend the night or get laid. So that's the standard I used for the list below.

Furthermore, we only credit countries that existed at the time of your visit. For example, in our family competition, I get one country for visiting Yugoslavia in 1986, not four countries now that is has broken up. (But break-up is still good, you can go back, re-trace your steps and get four additional countries!) But since you guys have established different rules for the country list, I am quite happy to up my count...

-- I started young, and
-- I do this for a living.

Far more impressive, perhaps, is a person who picks a few countries, finances their own trip, and stays long enough to learn the language, culture, etc.

Right now, there are only two countries that matter to me, well, I do worry about Chad/Sudan/Uganda a bit. :)

At least one overnight is my benchmark, there are a few more but I don't count inadvertant border crossings! Most was 22 in one year (I think).

Mind if I ask what you do?

"Mind if I ask what you do?"

I am a computer geek, currently with a full-time job, which I quit every once in a while and travel.

I blame my parents. We lived in Europe in the late 60s, and traveled around in a green '68 VW van - mom and dad on the fold-out bed, sister and brother shared the cot above the front seats, and I slept on the floor. After college, I spent a year and a half backpacking through Europe, North Africa, and Asia - that entire trip cost me less than US$10k, but I ate and slept in some truly stanky joints. After graduate school, my (now) wife and I traveled more through Asia. After 9 years at a high-tech company, I quit and we took a few years off for Australasia and then Africa. I am back at work, for now, coding and saving money for the next adventures: heading down South! (My mom is retired and is catching up on my country count - can't let that happen.)

Wow, first time I've looked at this thread...I win the 'country list' among my friends and family (my dad is a close 2nd), but I'm small change compared you guys!

US
England
China (both Eastern and Western, you could almost call it two separate countries!)
Hong Kong
Korea
India
Honduras
Canada
Singapore
Japan
Scotland (does this count?)

All either for work or using miles I got while on work trips. Economy sucks now, I haven't even flown domestically for a year :(

I would like to travel to many of these places, but I'm small beans endeed compared to most of the guys on here.
