Considering a Discovery

We've got a growing family and my wife needs a new daily driver that we can also camp out of, ski out of, and maybe take down to Baja.

We're seriously considering a Discovery and are wondering about the pro's and cons of this vehicle. I think I read somewhere that the 2004 is a good year. MPG seems pretty low, so obviously that's a factor.

What else should we be thinking of and prepare for? I really don't expect this vehicle to see a lot of hard off road use, mostly just dirt roads and snow, but with the capability to boondock a little.

thanks

2004 is a good year. The best of the DIIs

Generally, the Discovery best suited for remote, rugged terrain is the DI, preferably in the SD trip without sunroofs. The less electronics the better.

All will require more maintenance and repair than the typical Toyota, etc. There are advantages to ownership that justify the additional attention, primarily moderate trail capability, good load capacity, healthy aftermarket support and reasonable worldwide support.

A 2004 S spec with no sunroofs would be my choice if my '01 croaks.
