Started a new project a couple weeks ago. got this truck from my work through a scrap company, so the price was very good. I have also been involved with the maintenance for the past 15 years so I know the history. I will be use it as I work on it so, it will be a slow process. I will be converting it to 4x4 in the next year or so, and I already have every this I need to do so. GMC 7-1-2021.jpg

I recently started a thread titled Isuzu FC Locking Rear Differential Info, which you can find here:

https://expeditionportal.com/forum/...g-rear-differential-info.231237/#post-3005938

I have been offered a very low mileage 2006 NQR Crew Cab (diesel, 176" wheelbase, 12-foot tipping flatbed, full length 'roof' rack).

According to GM/Isuzu, the NPR HD / NQR / NRR / W5500 have few functional differences.

So, it appears that we would have (except for the cab layouts) seemingly identical trucks.

In the future, once LOTS of changes are made to our rural properties (dating to 1785), I might want to convert this NQR to 4WD.

However, I would need to maintain, if not actually increase, my NQR's weight carrying and towing capabilities.

That means a front drive axle rating of 8,000 to 9,000 lbs and a rear drive axle rating of 15,000 to 17,000 lbs.

It also means axle gear ratios over 6.0:1 (Isuzu fitted 6.50:1 gears to the older 4x4 FTS units) to maintain GCWR towing gradeability.

This precludes using the Dana Super 60 front axle which can be rated at 7,500 lbs. in the 19,500 lb GVW version of the Ford F-550.

But perhaps the 8,000 lb. rated front drive axle from the Chevy/GM Kodiak 5500 4x4 might be suitable.

Right now, I'm disinclined to give FABCO, etc. the exorbitant amount they want for a Dana S130 based front drive axle.

I would also want 4 pot fixed caliper disc brakes on both front and rear axles (like fitted to GM 8500 Topkicks, etc.)

If I convert this truck to 4WD I would likely do a long arm coil spring (NOT coil-over) & airbag suspension conversion.

And I would like to stretch the frame to increase the wheelbase to at least 200" (with almost no frame behind the rear tire OD).

So; what type of 4x4 conversion are you planning?

One that also at least maintains the OEM weight rating capabilities of the W5500; or one with a downgraded weight capability?
