Breathing life back into a high milage SR

I'm 3 days into my vacation and mid way through the rebuild and lift on my 96 SR and thought I'd share.

Ring end gaps were high but not beyond service limits, bearings had some smearing but no impregnation into the crank, no texture or grooves on any of the bearing surfaces, I plastigauged everything and it came out to be well within specs, no tapering, no thrust wear. Went with OEM rings, King bearings, felpro gaskets, OEM valve seals, revised lifters (that cost a bit) and the overhead cam valve spring tool (cost another bit) to install all that.

Original plan was to throw a single 50 trim turbo on the truck but with my plan being to move to Arizona in the near future, I need the truck to pull some miles reliably before I go doing stupid stuff. :snorkel:

Some pics to share:
Wheels tires are 37's on 17x10 american racing, trimming and lifting is in the works now.

Anyone know of other upper intake manifolds that bolt onto the 6G74? post 2000's eclipses? 8G galants? intrepid? Anything?

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
Can't wait till you get moved down here, i can tell we're going to be doing some hanging out. Especially when i get a '74-'76 Colt coupe :sombrero:

37's will do you good out here in our terrain, just keep your bumpstops fully in tact and in good condition and you won't have to worry about breakage in tierods or CV's. I'm sure being from the midwest you don't have the rubber rot we have here.
Also i hear you'll be down for a visit in the near future? Think you'll be able to get out on the trail at all?

Oh, you can switch to the later intake to delete the butterfly valves if you want. I personally like that setup way better i think you can send them out for a "tuning" if i can remember the shop.

37's huh, this will be interesting.

My last one had 35's on stock everything and 250,000 miles, just a little trimming, no sway bars and blown shocks. :D Handled it quite well.

Yeah! shooting for a week in February, i'd love to hit the trail. When I firm up the dates I'll let Brian and everyone know.

Which later? Like the SOHC 3.5's from 2000 and up?

How many miles were on that engine?

It had about 220,000 miles on it when I tore it down.

Nice to see you're refreshing her! Are you getting gears made to turn the 37s, or do you just not work the truck very hard? I've already been in situations where the engine couldn't turn 33s even at wide open throttle!

For towing of anything I generally use my dad's powerstroke, I've yet to ever tow anything with the montero but the most I'll ever tow would be a small utility trailer or a car dolly with my 73 mitsu galant wagon (weighs nothing) or my 76 sedan on it.

Today I tore the driverside head totally down to bare metal, cleaned everything and put in new OEM stem seals, this tool came in pretty handy but you need to secure the head to the bench for a much easier job.

Tomorrow is passenger side head, then the long block will go together.

Ahhh, nice to have access to the power stroke! I've tapped out the V6 just off roading at altitude with the 33's, but maybe Santa will get me deeper gears next year. Lol.

I forgot you were the Mitsu guru...I still dream of building a 400hp CSX sleeper... ;) Awesome project...best of luck on the Monty!

Did the older wagons still fall into the "DSM" engine family? Back in the 90's I had a DSM and a 3si long before folks started ricing them out, but never knew much about the older engines. I had a buddy in Colorado that owned a few GVR4's and did some insane things with them.

Yes, same engine family, but different generation. wagons and stuff came with the "Astron" generation and DSM's came with the "Sirius" generation

Wagons came rear wheel drive with the 4G52 (earlier generation of the 4G63 found in DSM's) or the 4G32 (previous generation of 4G61 from mirage) so the next generation can be bolted into them, like my wagon, came with 4G52, but i swapped in a 4G63 from a early 90's DSM. I also daily drive a GVR4, mostly stock right now but i have upgraded turbo, intercooling, cam shafts, fuel and tuning for it sitting in the garage. Years back I built a 12 second gvr4 you can watch a video of me beating on an evo when the evo 8 was new here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqUjYfIeam4
