Let me know if I can answer any questions. This was my first time there, so I now have a good lay of the land. There's some areas I visited that I want to go back to and others that I didn't have time for. So there's definitely another trip in my future. Also, make sure you don't go too late in the spring for either locations. It gets HOT out there!

We're heading south from Portland April 9th come hell or high water. I don't think that'll be too late based on my time living in the desert. I'll be doing the majority of my planning over the next month or so. I'll let you know if I have questions as they arise.

That part of the code allows for Metric equivalent, which M12 would be, since it's between 7/16 and 1/2. I recently came across M12 in 3 pitches-
1.2, 1.5, and 1.75- threw me at first.

Thanks for the info. I haven't looked into this any further.

Here's several more pics from my Mojave Road trip.

Here's another shot from the first night on the Colorado River.

The is the view from the start of the Mojave Road. Adventure awaits.

This is the view from Fort Piute back down to the Mojave Road, which you can see faintly on the left-hand side.

Getting back on the road after leaving Fort Piute, a long road lies ahead.

After climbing a winding steep hill, you're awarded a great view looking back.

It seems like the bus is a right of passage. There's a lot of history here, but I don't know the story.

This is one of two penny trees on the Mojave Road. I think this is the main one that has been there the longest.
2015-11-21_MojaveRoad_Z2A8152_web600.jpg

While hanging out near the penny tree, a coyote casually walked up to say hello.

I've mentioned the watering hole a couple times already. This really was a great location. Early morning light.
2015-11-22_MojaveRoad_Z2A8626_web600.jpg

Another shot at the watering hole.
2015-11-22_MojaveRoad_Z2A8670_web600.jpg

Also that morning, I took this shot of the truck. I love the light!

There's one seriously technical and steep hill on the trail. I think you can bypass this if you want, but I embraced the challenge. I walked the hill first, noted my line, and very carefully navigated down the hill in 4-wheel low. This is looking back after completing.

Gov't Holes is another good destination to visit. I would have preferred being here at first light, but that'll have to be for another trip.

Later that day, I ventured up to the Cima Dome area. I spent quite a bit of time around here scouting for pics. This is taken from Cima Road while standing on top of my Flippac.
2015-11-22_MojaveRoad_Z2A8822_web600.jpg

I then prowled the desert floor on foot for an hour or so.
2015-11-22_MojaveRoad_Z2A8852_web600.jpg

Lots of cool viewpoints of Cima Dome.
2015-11-22_MojaveRoad_Z2A8863_web600.jpg

That afternoon, I drove up some side roads to find closer views of Cima Dome.
2015-11-22_MojaveRoad_Z2A8933_web600.jpg

Of course, there's more to photograph aside from Cima Dome.
2015-11-22_MojaveRoad_Z2A8897_web600.jpg

Then the light started to get low in the sky.
2015-11-22_MojaveRoad_Z2A8939_web600.jpg

And a little alpine glow.

Near the Lava Tubes, there's great views of cinder cones.
2015-11-23_MojaveRoad_Z2A9440_web600.jpg

On the fourth night, I camped near some sand dunes up against Little Cowhole Mountain. This was a rarely used campsite, so I had great seclusion. I spent the afternoon photographing around camp.
2015-11-23_MojaveRoad_Z2A9644_web600.jpg

The mountain off in the distance is Cowhole Mountain.
2015-11-23_MojaveRoad_Z2A9662_web600.jpg

This texture caught my eye.
2015-11-23_MojaveRoad_Z2A9432_web600.jpg

Darkness took over, and I had some fun.
2015-11-23_MojaveRoad_Z2A0241_web600.jpg

Then the beers kicked in.
2015-11-23_MojaveRoad_Z2A0213_web600.jpg

And another...or two.

I awoke the following morning to a subtle, but interesting sunrise. This cloud formation caught my eye.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0262_web600.jpg

After breakfast, I continued around Little Cowhole mountain. Climbing up the hillside a bit offered this fantastic view.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0279_web600.jpg

As I neared the west end of Little Cowhole Mountain, I wormed my way up a road as far as I could go. Stunning views with the edge of Soda Lake on the right.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0296_web600.jpg

I passed this water tank earlier, and felt that it needed some attention.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0304_web600.jpg

Up close and personal.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0319_web600.jpg

I took the rangers advice and bypassed Soda Lake, following the Eastern edge out to Baker.

Although I bypassed Soda Lake, I really wanted to get to Traveler's Monument. So I decided to test the mud. I figured that if I went slow, I'd notice if I'd be getting in trouble before it happened. I made it.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0344_web600.jpg

I placed a rock on the pile and soaked in the views. I contemplated going all the way back across, but chose not to. I bet I could have made it. Conditions looked pretty good.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0335_web600.jpg

Leaving Soda Lake and driving the last leg was stress full at times due to the thick sand. Although I had means of extricating myself, I'd rather not. Once in Afton Canyon, I was blown away with the drama of the location.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0354_web600.jpg

I could definitely spend more time here with great light.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0364_web600.jpg

More texture underfoot.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0378_web600.jpg

I swear I didn't add this cloud. It really was arching over the mountain.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0403_web600.jpg

Exiting Afton Canyon follows the railroad and then turns under this bridge.

This is the last high point at the end of Afton Canyon before going back down into the wash to follow the Mojave River.

I saw this hill and was mesmerized. The light was looking like it had the potential to be killer at sunset. But after an hour of waiting, I could see that it wasn't going to hold. Meanwhile, I took this photo.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0430_web600.jpg

Reaching the end of the Mojave Road, I was greeted with this plaque.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0435_web600.jpg

This is the last section of road that leads down to Camp Cady.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0441_web600.jpg

Before hitting the pavement to return home, I stuck around until dark.
2015-11-24_MojaveRoad_Z2A0454_web600.jpg

Not the best sunset I've seen or photographed, but certainly a fitting end to a great trip!

Here's a couple more pics from the Mojave.

Lava Tubes
2015-11-23_MojaveRoad_Z2A9508_web600.jpg

View from the Lava Tubes. And for the photo geeks out there, this image was shot with 12 vertical frames using a 70-200mm lens at 200mm. It was stitched together using PTGui and processed in Photoshop. At a native resolution without any resizing, I can print this 22" x 110" at 360dpi.
