With the bump stops worked out, the rest of the fab needed on the suspension is easier to tackle with the axle out from under the truck, and the engine out of the way. I also wanted to clean up the firewall, patch up a bunch of un-needed holes, and get it ready for paint. I’ll be doing the same as under the truck – primer, sound deadedning (Lizard Skin), but with an additional layer of DEI heat shield.

Found what I think will be a nice fit for the air cleaner – it’s a stock part for a H2 hummer. Uses the Donaldson Powercore filter, should be easy to get replacements. It sits on top of the passenger inner fender like it was designed to be there.

Finished up the lower shock mounts, and burned in most of the brackets on the axle. It was one of those evenings where welding clicks (despite not doing much for the past year) so I just went for it.

Next steps are finishing burning in the suspension brackets on the axle and frame, a bit more fab work for the bumpstop cans on the frame, and deciding on whether to tackle the gears myself or have someone do it. Leaning towards the latter in the interest time. Also can work on painting the firewall, and building the final electrical panel based on the plywood mockup.

About time for an update - I have been working on the Scout, just not very quickly. We had another kid in April of last year, a little girl, and the 2 kids plus new job eat up a lot of time as i'm sure most of you know.

Finished up the suspension brackets, got the axles cleaned up and painted.

Tackled tig welding the threaded tube ends for the front links, took forever but i'm happy with the end result and I learned a lot. I tried my best to move from link to link and not overheat the threads, but still ended up needing to chase the threads. Next couple of steps in no real order: Exhaust, Plumbing, Build the electrical panel - basically trying to get it moving under its own power before the damn kids are old enough to drive it.

With the manual transmission you'll be much happier with the ARB in the back and the Detroit in the front. Even in a heavy long-wheelbase rig an automatic locker is miserable in the back. A spool would be much better for driveability and about the same for tire wear!

Good to see progress on this!

Had a Detroit in a 112" WB and hated it on the pavement and forgot about it in the dirt. Hated it the entire 20 years & ~125k miles that I owned that truck. Same truck had a Lock-rite in the front. I would never, ever do that again. ARB's for the front, only, from now on - no lockers up front.

Had a Detroit in the rear of a 129" WB ('79 & '91 Suburbans, same 14bff) and never noticed it on the pavement.

TruTrac in the rear of a 104" WB (FSB) and so far it works like a Detroit in the dirt and is transparent on the pavement. Very much still an experiment, but so far very much a winner.

ARB's in both axles in a ~104" WB (first gen 4rnnr) are Transformative. If the budget is there I see this as the ultimate set-up. BTW, mine are plumbed to engage independently, no electrical involved.

I've pretty well decided on selectable lockers front and rear, not decided on which one yet. I like the idea of the E-locker most, ARB and Ox-locker also in consideration.

I definitely prefer the E-locker, I'm not a fan
of ARB's. Too many potential failure points...

Not familiar enough with E-Lockers to know what their failure modes are. Am guessing that they have some sort of slip-ring system? If so, that brush or brushes would be a long term wear item.

Two o-rings are the worst part of an ARB, and those really only fail from wear or being mistreated during the install. The rest of the normal failure modes can be minimized with smart choices ahead of time.

Start with moving away from their 5mm tubing. As soon as you move to either 4mm (5/32" tubing is nominally .001" different) as I did or possibly 6mm the plumbing options available in the US increase dramatically. Just look at McMaster's options in those two sizes.

I convert to -4AN/JIC braided SS where the plumbing jumps of the chassis to the diff case. A -4 JIC (steel) to 5/16" NF brake adapter fitting was needed at ARB's bulkhead fitting thru the diff case. On the bolt thread side of the adapter fitting I drilled the hole a bit bigger and added a C'Sink to match their supplied fitting.

If you keep their solenoids, put exhaust mufflers on the exhaust ports. Not because they're loud, but because those are sintered filters much like carb fuel filters of old and they go a loooonnnngggg ways towards keeping the dust & dirt out of the solenoids. The first ARB install that I worked on, in 2003, didn't have anything for the solenoid exhaust ports. I was appalled that there wasn't something, so I added them. To my knowledge that Jeep has never had a problem with it's ARB solenoids. That said, I think it better to use industrial or big rig pneumatic switches instead of the solenoids.
