87 Trooper

A buddy of mine had a 87 Trooper project that he didn’t get very far into. He had just started rehabbing the fuel system and when he ran into parts availability problems it just kinda got pushed off to the side and more or less forgotten.

Yesterday he mentions in conversation that he’s thinking about getting rid of it so naturally I jumped on it. Well now I have a 87 Trooper. I’ve been missing a old school SUV since I sold my FJ80 so I’m pretty pumped. Now I haven’t even laid eyes on this thing in better than a year and I didn’t pay it a lot of attention then.

Right now I know I need fuel tank vents and grommets, maybe a new fuel pump assembly, and starter (I think the starter was why it was originally parked).

For now my plans are a good baseline with all new fluids, belts, hoses and a good go through on the brakes and suspension. With a little internet research it looks like the fuel vents and related parts are going to be super hard to find so if anyone has a good go to for parts please let me know.

I’ll post some pictures as soon as I get out to his place to go through the truck.

Pictures as promised. The mosquitoes were too bad to get too detailed.
Other than some surface rust where the paint is burnt off it looks rust free. The frame looks good from what I could tell but I was getting chewed on pretty bad and wanted to get back in the truck

JD - get a hold of Jerry Lemond at jlemond@bellsouth.net or jlemond on Planetisuzoo.com. He has more Isuzu parts than most dealers and if the fuel vents and gaskets are still available he should be able to get them for you or he may still have some in stock.
Is Jerry still kicking? I was under the impression he was not doing much anymore like this.

I picked up an 85 not too long ago, so I'm also in the learning phase. I wanted to do a weber carb upgrade, and found a 1.8 liter engine, and 4 speed trans with a weber carb, starter, alt, exhaust header, etc for $150. Cheaper than just the carb I was going to buy. I'm getting the engine sorted, then I have to tackle a bad cv joint, and find some manual locking hubs. There aren't a lot of troopers in the wrecking yards around me.

Just a quick update.
haven’t had much time to put into this project but that hasn’t kept me from ordering a crap ton of parts. Shy of the hard lines i with have or have on order the entire brake system, all of the steering parts (tie rod ends, ball joints and such), Odd and ends bushings, tons of hoses, shocks, all of the clutch hydraulics, and t pile of other crap. Now I just need to find a place to order up some time.
