5 day Baja adventure

Day 1:

Our trip started on the outskirts of San Diego early Thursday morning. Our destination for the day was the Old Mill in San Quintín so we wanted to get an early start. The day began with introductions as there were many first timers. A quick drivers meeting to go over trail & radio etiquette, and basic safety information. Soon enough we were on our way and crossing into Mexico!

We crossed in Tecate and headed west for Santo Tomas. The views from the highway did not disappoint as we passed through the northern Baja wine country.

Once we reached the trail head we all jumped out to air down.

After airing down we began making our way to the Pacific Ocean. Passed several local farms along the way. Soon enough we were on the coast. There's something about that first view of the ocean that really gets to you. You've always heard about Baja and how amazing it is but to actually see it in all it's glory is something else. It also makes me thankful this sort of trip is even still a possibility. Mexico offered to sell the Baja Peninsula to the US in 1917...thank god the US passed. Had the US acquired Baja the Coast would be littered with million dollar homes like most of California's southern coast. We certianly would not be blessed with the most amazing off-road trails in North America.

All was going well until Patrick had a little incident. He'd taken his truck in for service the day before the truck for an oil change and tire rotation. Apparently they did not torque his passenger front wheel lugs down to spec. His wheel flew off! Fortunately, it was as he was coming to a stop so no damage other than a couple sheared studs. Yes, he should have checked his wheels himself but at the same time, when you take your vehicle to a professional you expect them to do their job. Anyhow, I'd packed some spare studs and were on our way after about 20 minutes of working on the truck. If you're unfortunate to have this happen to you and don't have spare studs on you, pull a stud or two from each of the other wheels to get you on your way. Obviously, take it easy.

We began moving again...weaving our way down the Pacific coast.

As we neared San Quintín we were treated to some beach cruising as the sun began it's sunset...simply amazing views.

As we hit the final stretch of the trail we came upon some pretty legit silt beds. This is part of this years Baja 1000 course. This section was turned into a mud-pit during the race. Anyhow, everyone had a blast...as you can see from many of the smiling faces in the pics below!

We finished out the trail and headed for the Old Mill for a fantastic meal by Javier who runs the hotel & restaurant. He's likely one of the best cooks in Baja and never disappoints.

Day 2 recap coming soon!

Day 2 started with a relaxing morning at the Old Mill. Victor (who's an avid fisher) woke up early and nabbed a couple fish before breakfast. The mornings there always seem to be so relaxing...light mist in the air and right by the bay. Forgot to get some pics that morning so these from the night before will have to do ;)

After breakfast we headed south on the 1. Along the way we stopped at the "Seal Hole" it lives up to it's name and is pretty beautiful.

After exploring the area we began moving south again to reach the next trail head. The days route certainly was scenic as we traversed in and out of washes as we made our way south along the Ocean.

We rolled into Catavina to throw 5 gallons of gas into most of the rigs. Locals sell gas out of 55 gallon drums on the side of the road here since there is no gas station. Well, there is a gas station built with pumps but has not been finished. Every time we are there they tell us it will be open in a month or two. That's been going on since 2017 lol. That's how some things are in Mexico.

After leaving Catavina, we made our way down the trail and found a nice spot amongst the Cactus for camp for then night.

We woke up around 7am...well some of the group began filtering out of their tents. Many of us had been woken up a few times in the early morning be coyotes which sounded pretty darn close to camp a few times. Some of the group prepared an elaborate breakfast with eggs, bacon, and such. Other grabbed a breakfast bar and an energy drink. Always fun to see everyone's different setups and routines.

By 8:30-9am we were packed up and charging for the coast again.

Around noon we reached the coast which made for an awesome lunch stop. Everyone definitely was feeling the Baja vibes haha.

After soaking in the rays for a bit we began working our way south for a while and then started heading inland again. Our destination for the day was Bahia de Los Angeles. We were all eager for tacos...shrimp tacos, fish tacos, carne asada tacos...they have it all there haha.

As we made our way southeast we came upon another silt bed. Baja silt is something else...it can be a lot of fun but it can be home to hidden hazards like a boulder or a nasty rut. This one was one of the fun ones...no damage other than some dusty interiors lol.

We began working our way up into the mountains. The views were pretty amazing as we slinked our way through the switchbacks. One of the really cool things about Baja is how the terrain changes in such a short distance.

We eventually made our way to the highway and made the turn of to Bahia de Los Angeles. Once we reached town we scarfed down as many tacos as our tummies could hold haha. We then made our way north of town to setup camp. Man the evenings views did not disappoint!

Great looking trip. What kind of speeds do you need to maintain to get through that silt?

Don't have to go do crazy...just enough to keep the momentum going. Definitely helps to have 4x4. 10-20mph should be good for the ones above.

If you don't mind, where on the (I assume, Pacific) coast were you before you set out to Bahia De Los Angeles?
