5.29 w/35s, 1st Gen Tundra

Been searching for a while and can’t find any threads on this.

Stepping up to 35s (35x12.5x17) - those that have 35s let me know if I should consider a different rim / tire size combo. Also F/R ARBs

From others sounds like 4.88 is the way to go. Can someone post their rpms at various highway speeds? I did the grim jeered calculator and want to compare for reference.

Now for the real question, does anyone with the 4.88 35s combo wish they would have gone 5.29? I dot go over 70-75mph. Only other concern would be front diff strength.

Looking forward to the replys!

Can't speak to the tundra, but I run 4.56's with 35's on my JKU. It seems good but there are times I wish I had the 4.88's. don't know about your diffs, but for the jeeps (unless a rubicon) 5.12's are about as high as you can go due to the small pinion size you would end up running on the dana 30 up front. I would imagine 5.29's would be uncomfortably low on the highway.

I ran 35’s with 4.30 gears and it put me back to stock. I was getting 17 mpg on the freeway and had no issue towing a trailer either with that combo. The nice thing is you can find that combo on stock vehicles. I think I paid $500 total to do the swap.

Personally, I’d probably stick with 4.88’s for the Tundra. Just due to weight and power - that 5.29 pinion is small

Went with 4.88s. Now to decide on tire size (I’ll save us another brand debate).

Go 34 and 285/75/17?

Others? Excited to get some bigger meats!

The KO2s come in a 34x10.5x17 that would be a good option, but I have no experience with a tire that big so I would bet rubbing and/or trimming may be unavoidable.

4.88's and 35's are perfect. I think my speedo is off about 10% but the rpms when I am doing "70-75" is around 2200-2300. Off road I sometimes wish I had gone 5.29's but overall it's one of the best upgrades I have done.

488s on order - came across a different tundra owner that is ADAMANT that I not go deeper than 456, in fact pushing me towards 430 and states the 488s will break time and time again, want to solicit others that may have this combo. Also expressed highway RPMs will be far too high, I expect what Jon stated above which is what I want given I am about to put 35s on and still need to install my skid row set that arrived last week (150lbs). Add in my bumper, sliders and additional planned camping weight in the back, seems like the right choice. If I ever come across a blower I will jump on it, but dang these things are rare and seems like a huge can of worms to rebuild, install, tune, etc. Also recommended the following for gear install seems overkill?

REM superpolishing, strengthening the ring/pinion, coatings, polished and coated bearings, OEM bearings, OEM seals, and a solid pinion spacer for the clamshell

And yes, I fully recognize the inherent weakness of a 7.5" clamshell, just something to be aware of and deal with as it comes.

Everyone has an opinion and I appreciate the comments from those that have tried (I cant find what gears toyotech is running, can't dig through his 55 page thread right now).

Here's a shot of my truck just because. Not aired down - cant wait for my ARB compressor...
