18s have different backspacing than 20s, not to mention different widths

My friends truck is a 2015 with 20s......3-1/2" lift

He's running 285/65R20s and they rub with the factory 20s

I don't know that anyone is fitting 33x12.5 (approx. 315 width) tires with no lift and no level. That's a pretty wide tire for a stock truck, to not rub when compressed at full lock. I'm pretty sure it won't rub when just driving down the street, but that's not exactly the definition of "doesn't rub." A 33x11.5 (285 width) should fit any new, stock, full-size 4x4 on OE wheels, since current models offer 33's as a factory option (usually 275/60r20). The K2 generation GM 1500's were a snug fit for a 285/70r17 or 285/65r18 without a lift or level, even on stock wheels. Allegedly they will fit without rubbing on stock wheels, but there's enough conflicting information that I wouldn't count on it - tire width was the issue, not height.

You are completely right, and I mistyped. I meant 33x11.5, or 285/70R17 assuming 17" rims. HOWEVER I will say, my '04 F150 with a Rancho Quicklift (2.5 level) and Moog HD springs since the Rancho are just too soft, and a "California Trim" fits 35x12.50/17 on 17x9 Pro Comps, full compression, full lock, no rub. And 285/70R17 fit with the same 17x9s and no level / lift...

Again this would be better discussed with the brand specific folks. I remember my 78 IHC Scout 2 required a spring over and fender trimming to keep 33x12.50/15s from rubbing...

Ran 275 70 18 duratracs on factory wheels for years. 2014 Sierra With rough country level. Slight rub on fender liner in reverse full lock. You’re good to go man.

Yes and no.

Some trucks and SUVs they fit just fine with a 2" level/lift some they do not.

2005 Escalade with torsion bars cranked to the max, perfect fit and no rubbing with 285/70R17 (33x11.5")
2007 Yukon XL with 2" level:/same rims and tires slight rubbing with minimal trimming required.

265/60R18 same size as 265/70R17 31.5x10.5"

285/70R17 33x11.5" with slight rubbing up front.

37x12.5" tires with no lift, lots and lots of rubbing but hopefully get there before the winter is over.
