255/80r17. THREE OPTIONS.

There's also the 34/10.50/17 KO2 which is pretty close to a 255/80/17..

I'm running these on my JK around Africa.

They have been nothing short of brilliant on everything I have thrown at them, and are wearing extremely well after over 30k miles of hard life.
I really have no need to buy anything different ever again.

I also like 255/75r17, but I wish I could find a good all terrain in a LT D or E rating.

edit: Misread title, thought this was a 255/75r17 thread.

The 255/75R17 size is the OE Jeep Rubicon size, and because of the intended application, I don't think there are any made in load ranges higher than C. The 255/80R17 tires are intended for 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, so they are all LR E.

As an aside, LR D is pretty much dead. Because all new 3/4 and 1 ton trucks have TPMS that wants to see ~80psi in the rear tires, all mfg's are now certifying their heavier light truck tires to LR E, which is 80psi max. (LR D was 65PSI, and therefore won't work on a newer truck.) As older certified LR D tires get discontinued, the LR D rating will become extinct. Honestly, in terms of tire weight and flexibility, there's not enough difference between a D and an E to even be talking about it.

when I was looking for tall skinny (255/85r16) I ended up with the st maxx because it had the widest actual tread width. Some of the other options where almost a inch skinnier on the tread , something to think about when comparing the tires .

Toyo Open Country A/T

Looks like the Toyo Open Country A/T is now available in 255/80r17. Appears to be the "extreme" tread pattern. Good price-- I wonder how much they weigh?

Just in the LT style tread actually.

I run the 34/10.5R17 KO2s, as its winter 4 months a year or more here. Not crazy skinny, almost 33" tire. They should have just called it a 33 and everyone would be happy.
I was running 235/80R17... and surprisingly they weren't wearing as well on my over loaded F150. Neighbor had the KO2 in 35s on his diesel 2500 Ram and they didn't wear well either. Quiet though, especially when you rotate them normally.
Id have gone with the Toyos but the local Toyo dealer said "not currently available" and didn't seem to interested in looking into it. Toyo USA or Nitto has another tire in that size but forget which one.

Here is a Ko2 34x10.5r17 compared to a 255/80r17 km2. Still skinny-ish, more or less same height.

I'm curious about 285/75R17. Yes, technically it's a 33.8x11.20, but I wonder if many 285's are really 11.2" wide on the tread. It's far cheaper than 34x10.50, with prices ranging between $200-$300 per tire for the 285's.

With the Falken in the mix and the Cooper 255's becoming more common, I think you'll be able to occasionally find them under $200.

I have run the ko2 in 34x10.5-17 and also 3 different tires ie Toyo and coopers in 285/75-17 and the 285/17-17 are considerably bigger than the 34x10.5-17 and 255/80-17's.

I've spent soon much time searching for tire pics of the 34x10.5R17 before I went with them, and most of the good comparison pics I found were from you jadmt!!
Thanks!

Edit' and yeah, the 285/75R17 is narrow considering its diameter, it's not really that narrow.

I think the biggest issue people have are the prices of the 34x10.50. I for one was excited about them, as were many others when the size was announced. BUT talk about sticker shock! $328 per tire at Discount Tire and $327 at Tire Rack! for a 33" tire to cost as much or more than many 35" tires put a lot of people off. I paid $185/ tire for my Toyo AT 255/80/r17.

If the local Toyo dealer actually wanted to sell me tires, and the price was anywhere near as good as you were quoted, id have gone with them in that size 100%. It was only $200 less than I paid for the 5 BFG, and yes, they were expensive. I wish i could find the invoice for them.
