2021 RimRocker Colorado -Moab Moto/Camping Run....V3.0

Attn: Adventure Riders

For the past three years we've coordinated a week long Adv Moto/Camping trip to Moab and back. It's composed of a small group of Adventure Riders (Max of 6-8 Riders). It normally starts in Nederland, Colorado and then travels via two lane, dirt track, mountain pass, trails to Montrose, Co and then across the RimRocker trail to Moab and then back via forest rides and mountain passes thru Telluride, Ouray, Buena Vista, Camping each night along the trail. This year's tentative route will include a new portion of the RR and additional exploration west of Moab.

We're narrowing down the 2021 Rim Rocker Run dates for somewhere around the last week of July and/or the second week of August. Maximum of 5-7 days (note: these are tentative and for planning only, will post firm dates shortly).

This trip is open to any Adv./Dual Sport Bike capable of carrying you and all your camping gear for a week off-road. There is no cost to attend, space is limited and you must supply your own gear, supplies, moto, insurance, comms, meet at the designated meet-up spot (Nederland, Co) and fund your own way. We will not be on any interstate highways but, the bike needs to be able to run two lane posted speed limit for extended periods. While most of the trip will be two-track, off-road riding, mud, water crossing, maybe snow, high altitude passes, etc.....there won't be any highly technical portions (boulders, steps, shelfs, steep climbs, etc.....).

Please note, there is risk associated to riding in the back country. You should be skilled and comfortable with off-road riding, high altitude, exposed edges, sandy/muddy/slick conditions, trail repair, flat tire repair, roughing it, etc......

As the dates firm up and interest develops, I'll post-up a gear/supply list.

If you have any questions or interested, please let me know. Cheers.

I come in Peace
This looks awesome. Not that I'd be able to make it, but I have a few questions.

Which bike would be the better option for this, my XR400R or my 1090R?
How long do you think these sections would be? Are we talking 55mph speed limits on these roads?

What are you using for comms?

With your skill set both would be an excellent choice depending on how comfortable you are during long rides with a fully loaded bike. I run a KLR650, my friend has a new BMW800 fully kitted he's running this year, last time he did it on his fully kitted XR400 with no problems at all (he's a much better rider then me!).

How long do you think these sections would be?

Generally speaking, the two lane stuff can be between 50-100 miles @ 55-65 mph. Most of these are across long valleys, maybe a pass and open western prairies. We do these to get the miles under our belt to be able spend more time in the back country.

What are you using for comms?

Nothing too crazy, a cheap and rechargeable Baofeng ($50) (ham license required) and a helmet headset, boom mic, w/finger ptt ($25 on Amazon). It nice to have but, not a deal killer since we'd run comms on point and tailgunner to keep everyone together. It's nice to have so you can participate in the trail chatter.

Great questions! Thanks!

FYI:

Days on bike: 5-7 days (From starting point to end point, Nederland, Co.)
Time on bike: Approx. 8 hours per day (totally dependent on conditions, route, oops along the trail, etc.)
Total mileage: Approx 1800-2000 +/- miles (totally dependent on final route, miles per day, everything.....)
Weather: Yes......Generally speaking be prepared for mild temp weather, cold (+/- 30 degrees) in the morning, hot
(+/- 80-100 degrees) while in and around Moab, hit and miss afternoon rain storms, possible snow at high altitudes, so.....you will need riding gear for 4 seasons. Cool!

Please note: 40 - 60 hours on a bike, for hundreds of miles in the back country, sometimes at high altitude (+/- 8000 feet) will test you physically. If your not a regular rider consider starting a work out program to build up core strength, stamina and get some "saddle time" time in to build up that iron butt.....Cheers.

I need to buy a bike and learn to ride it so I can do this trip some time. Sounds like fun.

This is the 3rd year for this (mis-)adventure and we plan on continuing it for as long as I can throw my leg over a bike, so........keep it in mind for the near future!

Bike prep time! Started pulling it apart and checking, cleaning, tightening (it is a Thumper after all.....) tune-up and adding some new farkles. Also started my "to do" list so the trusty KLR will be ready for this year.

Love that custom moto stand you got there. Totally adjustable. The big "To Do" list is pretty good too.

Yeah, I wore out the old milk crate....using the cut-offs from the shop posts....probably should get one of those new fangle aluminum ones one day. The "List" got much bigger after the photo.

Perfect day to get the old shock out and get it sent off for a custom rebuild. Getting some new tires ordered and should get this thing back together for some road time.......if this stuff ever melts!5FDA6A99-C1EB-4408-810A-8EB064F2E4A8.jpeg88CB78E7-5C34-4278-ABB4-C4AF5EAC16A5.jpeg

I am doing it again this weekend, 5/22-23 by 4x4 with our local club the Book Cliff Cruisers. But I also plan to do it very soon on my TW200. Probably in June before it gets too hot. In the process of collecting up lightweight camping gear now. I’d probably head from here in Cedaredge to Moab, rest a night in Moab, then return home the same way. I’d like to be able to run “my backyard” with you guys but my bike is too slow. Y’all have a great trip.

By the way Rimrocker is one word.
