2017 Wrangler will be longer

Automotive News has a couple of spy shots showing a Wrangler test vehicle with about 10 inches added in front of the windshield. Other sources say it's about 2 inches longer.

The newspaper speculates that the extra room is required to fit an 8 speed transmission. This transmission is used in Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge and Chrysler cars, and Ram 1500 truck models. So just about any of FCA's V6, V8 and Diesel engines could be used.

They could stretch the wheel base without stretching the tub, if it's only a couple of inches.
Would provide better fender clearance for the Factory 35" tire option on the new Rubicon Extreme model.

That would be very surprising if that was the only change to the body... I expect there will be much more such as a non-folding windshield etc.

I think these are just modified "mules" of the existing body to test drivetrain / suspension changes.

Eh,

I take that with a grain of salt. I think it's safe to say that modified JK has a longer engine/trans than normal, which is what they're testing.

That has nothing to do with how it will be put into a JL.

The photos just show a modified JK to fit the different engine/trans, they don't say anything about the final length of the JL.

That doesn't look longer to me at all. I would expect the redesign to be more radical than that.

There was a thread earlier which had some photos which showed the additional length more clearly:

They are mules, nothing more. Current Wranglers modified to test components of the next gen Wrangler. But I'm excited some kind of spy shots showing up :wings:

WHAT!?! No more soft top and no more roll bar?!?

http://blog.caranddriver.com/2017-jeep-wrangler-top-centric-details-emerge/

We already know the folding front windshield will be replaced by a fixed unit. According to Allpar's source, the traditional soft top will also disappear. Additionally, the sport bar is replaced by an integrated substructure, likely with at least four stressed mounting points: “The traditional soft top is gone,” the website's source says. “It appears to have removable soft panels over the substructure. The sport bar design is gone. It even appears to have built-in grab handles.”
