I was there on Sunday (at Beach Blvd.) with a bunch of friends. I didn't take my camera this year, though.

I was there on Sunday up near the pier. Great show but got a bit of a sunburn. Was that a F-22 Raptor that came in right before the F-16. It also flew as a trio with the Mustang and F-16. I loved that photo. You got a great shot of it also right below the Blue Angles with the vapor forming as it shot straight up from level flight.

Thanks guys!

The F-35 and F-22 have a similar look with twin vertical stabilizers and the overall approach to stealth. Note the slightly different shapes for the horizontal surfaces though.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, both the F-35 and F-16 were using their afterburners (loud).

Another question, did one of the Blue Angels make a pass at the speed of sound? It came through very fast and I thought I detected a muffled boom as it passed.

It may seem like they break the sound barrier. But they're not.

I was not referring to all of them. There was a single Blue Angel (FA-18) that made a very fast pass. That pass was for sure faster than any other passes. If it was not going the speed of sound, it was very close to it.

Okay, I did a little research about their routine. They have one pass called the 'Sneak Pass' which is around 700 mph (just under Mach 1 at sea level). That is the fastest pass of the show.

Another piece of information I came across was; in 2018 the Blue Angels will transition to unmanned aircraft. They will demonstrate the abilities of the F-47. I hope this does not diminish the awesomeness of the show. They consider the FA-18's as getting quite old and worn out and thought it was time to replace them.

Makes no sense whatsoever and here are 12,053,076 reasons why:

https://www.newsairshow.com/headlin...ct-for-blue-angels-transition-to-super-hornet

Monday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that the Boeing Company has been awarded the contract to begin the transition of the Blue Angels from the F/A-18 Hornet to the F/A-18 Super Hornet. The contract is as follows:

Boeing Co., St. Louis, Missouri, is being awarded $12,053,076 for cost-plus-fixed-fee, delivery order 0002 against a previously issued basic ordering agreement (N00019-16-G-0001) for non-recurring design and development engineering for an engineering change proposal for the "Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron (Blue Angels) Super Hornet Conversion." Work will be performed in St. Louis, Missouri (82.8 percent); and El Segundo, California (17.2 percent), and is expected to be completed September 2017. Fiscal 2016 aircraft procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $12,053,076 are being obligated at time of award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity.

Boeing just announced that the U.S. Navy awarded the company a more than $12 million contract for “non-recurring design and development engineering for an engineering change proposal” to transition the Blue Angels from Hornets to Super Hornets.

The Blue Angels fly an older version of the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet. They are scheduled to move to the newer Super Hornet in 2018. Their current F/A-18’s are legacy aircraft, among the oldest flying.

Boeing scored a $12 million dollar contract to transition the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels flight demonstration squadron to newer jets. The Blue Angels, who have been flying the F/A-18 Hornet since 1986, are moving up to the bigger F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

Here is a link to the website that exhibits the F-47s and information. http://airshowstuff.com/v4/2015/us-...nsition-to-unmanned-aircraft-for-2018-season/
.
It is dated April 1, 2015. I said I came across information, I didn't say it was real. I guess it is in poor taste to show it 2 1/2 years after it was originally an April Fools prank.

Not so much in poor taste but it makes no sense to fly a bunch of drones in front of a crowd who want to see "the right stuff" in the cockpit. No F-47s were ever built.

A little bit of research would have fleshed things out more thoroughly.

A little bit more of that basic research would show that there was only two of the X-47B UCAS-Ds (Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstrators) were ever built and that funding for development was halted in 2016:

I didn't make it to the event but just wanted to say, great photos! Thanks for sharing. Looks like a blast.
Always love air shows.. Might have to make sure I get this on my calendar when/if it comes back around again. :)
