**Testimonial: If you have been driving your 2016 Tacoma with oversized tires, than you are probably disappointed with the new engine combo, but with proper gearing they are actually very nice. We recently fitted the first set to the XOVERLAND.COM 2016 Tacoma, which is fully outfitted and includes an AT Overland Habitat (camper). Rachelle and Rhonda complained that the new truck was constantly shifting and burning through a ton of fuel, that it "just didn't feel right.” Installing the new 4.88 ratio Nitro gears resulted in an immediate improvement in drive-ability and later a 3-4 mpg increase on their 10 hour drive home. You can see the video from the shop floor here at the Expedition Overland Facebook page**

So, recommendations for a 97 4runner auto, V6 with 285/75s?? And pulling a SoCal Teardrop Trailer. Pretty flat in my area, but most of our camping and trips are in the Smoky Mountains

That seems like a big jump

Not at all. Compare the final ratios of a 5-speed equipped vehicle to that of an auto. The OD on an auto is about .7, while the manual is about .85. That’s a massive difference in final drive ratio to make up for. 4.88’s with your tires (my double cab has 4.88s and your same tire size) will put you fairly close to the 5-speed final drive ratio. Add that you are towing and the little extra is just that much better.

The difference is night and day. 70mph is still only about 2600 rpm. Towing will be easier, mileage likely no worse, and you’ll be quite happy.

Yep, 4.88's for that 97 runner and that tire size. It will feel like a whole new vehicle.

Didn't realize you were just over the hill. Any reason to do this on stock Tacoma's with maybe a max 32” tires? And how does this affect drivetrain warranty if you still have one?

‘99 4Runners with the Sport package came with 4.30s and 265/70s. I’d agree with running 4.88s for your 4Runner.

I went from 4.30's to 4.88's on my 1999 and it was not as noticeable as you would think. The 4.88 pretty much put it back to stock gearing when running 33 inch tires.
