2002 7.3l 4r100 transmission - 9 check balls ******?

I'm in the process of overhauling a used 4r100 for my 4wd conversion. The ATSG manual says I should have 8 check balls under the the valve body gasket. I have found 9 check balls as shown below.

The extra ball is the furthest to the right in the pictures below. I think the ball of interest should not be there as I do not see any way it could seat itself in either the transmission case hydraulic channels or on the metal valve body gasket. The opening between the bottom channel into the little triangular channel is to wide for the ball to completely block flow.

Not sure what to do here. All the research I've seen only accounts for 8 check balls.

Anyone have any input on this?

leave it... you don't want to find out why its supposed to be in there when you get it in the van and its facing the other way!
some gm 6 speed transmission added a check ball later in life and when you re built a older one you would install one more check ball.
