1996 Suburban 2500 build.

Hey all! Just joined this forum the other day. I love the outdoors and offroading, and exploring historic/abandoned sites. I have 3 vehicles. 2 Suburbans and a 4Runner. I will be putting up a seperate build thread for my 4Runner in the next few days. This thread is going to focus on my 1996 Suburban 2500. Suburbans are an excellent platform for overland/bug out builds.

With this truck, I am not going to be doing any hardcore trails (thats what the 4Runner is for), however will be doing minor trails and road trips. I am moving back to Tucson, AZ from NY in the next month or so, so this truck will serve as my all purpose vehicle so to say

---------PLANS--------------------------------------------
-New trans with deeper trans pan w/ drain.
-New brush guard and offroad rear bumper
-Interior carpet (ordered!)
-Paint (finished!)
-Third brake light replaced (finished!)
-Smoked front headlights (installed just need bulbs!)
-Set of PY0 wheels
-Smoked rear tail lights
-CB radio
-offroad lights
-cowl hood?
-New radiator with correct height filler neck

This is how I picked it up. Blown 4l80e, paint in need of help, and a moldy sh!tty interior...all for $1000. Not too bad. Had it towed home the next evening.

The brush guard was awesome however it was rotted out bad and I scrapped it. I also ditched the running boards the next day.

Then I started to remove the nasty interior and carpet. Yuck.

I got a really nice set of seats out of a tan 92-94 Suburban. Middle row on ebay, 2 front seats from Craigslist, and a third row from the U pull it.

Also put on a "new" rear and front bumper, since the existing ones were rotted or starting to rot.

And here is where the re-build starts. First thing I was going to change was the color. The paint was in rough shape, and I do not have the money to drop it off at a shop to get a whole new paint job, and bodywork. So I did some bodywork myself as best as I could, and decided what I was going to do for paint.

The plan was to do desert/military tan with black accents. Here is the final product! Did 2 coats, and still have some touch up work to do and add the black to the roof rack. This is where we are at now. Yes, I will be going back to a GMC grille once I can get one at the u pull it thats not cracked. I might have to make a trip up there before I return to Tucson.
I also put on a new third brake light, along with ordering interior white LEDs and a lighted roof visor!

I saw that beach pass and had to re-read your intro. You are insane for building a local truck and moving out west with it when you will have so many rust-free options available in Arizona.

I got it awhile back before I even had plans of moving back to Tucson. However I know exactly your thoughts, trucks out there are mint.

Don't feel to bad, I moved to Scottsdale and brought my Tahoe here from Kansas in December. already dumped over 2 grand into it to get it ready for the desert since I've been here.

So I got the visor on the other night. Need to secure the wires behind it, but I am very happy with the look! And i started on the carpet yesterday. Coming along pretty good so far!
