1996 Montero sr thermostat housing... and revival

Go up to the next size bigger bolt......I wouldn’t run a critical component like that without all the bolts the engineers wanted it to have, at 100%

Okok let’s get on with the update. Filled w coolant and the truck starts right up and idles about 1500-1700 rpm. Gave it a rev, and BAM! Clack clack clack, *smoke from the hood*

Killed it. Popped the hood and saw this:

Apparently if you leave the fan off, you need to tighten the fan bolts so that pulley stays in place... who woulda thought? Guess I was excited to start it. The smoke was one of the belts being melted after the pulley came off and started rubbing.

Glad I made the mistake because it made me see this:

Broken alternator. Looks like it’s been broken a while. Luckily I have a parts truck with a good one. While swapping the alternator, I saw this:

Fresh oil drip out the front of the engine. Anyone have input? Am I going to have to take the entire front of the engine apart to find that leak?

Also, truck runs like poop when the MAF is plugged in, so I gotta figure that out.

Crankshaft front seal is most likely the cause of your leak. You'll want to replace it along with the camshaft front seals when you do the timing belt service. You'll also want to make sure you've got the updated crankshaft pulley bolt - the original design has a possibility of breaking off and leaving it's threads in the crankshaft, a problem you really don't want to have.

Thanks for the input. The gentleman that sold me the truck is a member here and knows Monteros real well and did the timing belt before he sold it to me.

Is getting at that front crankshaft seal possible without removing all the timing belt components?

Been busy replacing the entire interior - including the dash, carpet, etc. front a 95. This thing was NASTY when I took it apart. Also swapped the front left quarter panel and the front body bar thing behind the bumper. Lots of work. The green sr is the donor truck with a seized engine. 8F13B7E5-24F3-4F45-8EAC-A6A7D909B2F8.jpeg6056B909-66AB-4335-BD43-3DD2A04AD8EE.jpeg46ACEC0F-2EFB-43D0-8318-07052484F692.jpegC9485762-8431-4EF8-859B-36C48EF4ABC1.jpegDBA1B30D-3C85-476E-871A-140F6EE6B986.jpeg

Some pics cleaning and swapping body panels. Not crazy clean, but as clean as I’ll get it and the rat smell is gone. The 95 has a brown interior so every panel needs replacement to match the color. 4BE8542F-D5F5-40E6-B270-BDF40B79C7F2.jpeg8B03734D-DB0F-458C-918B-390730578335.jpegD810CCCF-3F11-4C8D-984A-AA45B8BAD5EC.jpegC7C0D508-02A9-4A95-B3DD-22C4331409D0.jpeg77AA2988-8BE6-4264-91B2-B9A48F9293C7.jpeg

Swapped the speedo backings for yellow. The temp and gas gauges weren’t coming off and didn’t want to force them. Didn’t want to swap the entire cluster because I didn’t know if 95/96 electronics are interchangeable and in the speedo cluster. Also, didnt want to mess with the miles recorded. 54311106-793D-42D0-87D0-732EB05D0749.jpeg049AE885-3E70-4269-ADB4-C9E95962980B.jpeg
More to come. Gotta be off this property in about 10 days!

Put down some killmat and then a liner to isolate the cabin a bit. Probably not necessary, as in mu other gen 2, all the cabin noise is wind noise, while road noise is barely noticeable. But, while it’s apart… 887066E2-3D1B-459A-BD2F-2EC435059362.jpeg

and put the new-used-washed carpet in. Looks better in person than the pics, and looks WAY Better than the original

also pulled the headliner because guess what, it’s also nasty. Also looks like I’ll have to swap the entire sun roof because I don’t see a way to pull the sun roof slide which needs replacement to match the color of the donor headliner.
