Oh, good. Jim, the seller, has been trying to sell his for a while. I emailed him yesterday about the successful sale of the one in this thread http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10556 and about the sale of this one http://austin.craigslist.org/car/552357077.html so that news probably prompted him to to relist his again.

As for the buyer of the Austin TX one, he is our newest Chalet owners' forum member who's going to transfer the camper part to his '83 diesel Blazer.

Jim's photos from the craigslist ad below

just curious, how difficult would it be to upgrade the powertrain on these to something a bit more modern and fuel efficient?

EASY! I looked into these before. I actually built one before that worked sweet! My ideal one would be stock chalet with one ton axles(virtually bolt in) and a 4cyl Cummins. It would make an awsome platform!

Call me an evil speculator, scroll down to Lot #312 in this auctions page for a '76 Chalet with what seems to be a mild lift kit (or maybe those tires make it look extra tall) but is otherwise stock: http://www.raleighclassic.com/new/results.php

Considering what I saw at the recent Barrett-Jackson Auction for rather rare '70s cars, I'm thinking it's not economically wise to alter a good condition original.

Myself, I'll start over later with perhaps an early '80s 6.2 diesel Blazer with o.d. tranny, so at least I'll be ahead of the game already. From what I've seen, there is a somewhat steady stream of Chalets for sale where the Blazer underneath is too far rusted to save, and some are campers-only, long since separated from the Blazer and nobody knows where it is now....

Bummer. I instantly recognized the Chalet which appeared yesterday on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chev...002QQitemZ120235759485QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW as one I photographed in Phoenix in 2005, and then noticed its eBay description has the same wording as the $17,000 Raleigh auction Chalet in my post above. When I looked at web photos I saved from the Raleigh auction, there's the same Alaska plate, gray dinette seats and various other details in all three photo collections.

It's the same one! AZ to NC to CA, this one moved around. The mileage hasn't changed from the 2005 AZ newspaper ad, so it got trailered. I was hoping a private collector actually paid the big bucks for it............

Double bummer. In a nutshell, classic car dealers are throwing a monkey wrench in getting a real value established for these rare GM factory campers. The serial number 58 Chalet in the post above now appears here http://ww2.collectorcartrader.com/details.php?adId=90257930 and now a different Chalet serial #560 that I've watched since 2005 popped up on eBay over the weekend.

Serial #560 was initially sold by a dealer called "Lost Classics" in Idaho to this place (scroll down 1/3rd of the page) http://web.archive.org/web/20050831175633/http://www.ebizautos.com/babish/ where I saw it in person while visiting my brother in Johnstown PA on Labor Day weekend 2005 - note the 209448 number for the VIN. Then it sold on eBay Oct 2005 for $10,000, and ended up in Kansas (slow loading web page) http://www.ezautolot.com/detail.asp?id=169 only to be picked up at another vehicle auction by these guys in Minnesota http://www.findcars.com/a.php3?q=220186#emhop for several months, and now the current eBay seller says he is a "... a Licensed and Bonded Dealer in the state of Nebraska..." http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chev...34405950QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item270234405950&

These two Chalets are roaming all over the country but never go camping......

To the best of my knowledge, the one in posts 1 & 2 is still available. Here's the latest complete rig on eBay, Elko NV, $2500 buy-it-now, engine doesn't run and it appears to be missing the closet in the back passenger side...
