Rigged up the VW master clutch cylinder and linkage... Installed cab..needed to redo the remote oil filter and need the add two 45 degree elbows so the hose barbs do not interfere with the cab.. the starter motor fits but is to tight so some cab modification is required..
Mocked up the VW throttle pedal.
So far so good.

Slowly parts get buttoned up..more wiring organizing.. coolant leaks..cluster mod for idiot lights related to the TDI engine.
Kept the intercooler out for now and bypassed with a high end chrome pipe.. the slip joint came apart when the turbo spoiled up.. a self tapping screw prevented that from happening again.
Modified the remote oil filter adapter so that the connections were in a better direction.. a fancy moroso was just to big.

Thats a big milestone! You'd be pleased with that! Re the turbo, it could be that the engine has sat for a while. Clean all the intake hoses up and see how it goes. You could also run it with the hose between the turbo and the inlet manifold off for a little and see if the smoke is less.

Good idea, I just did that and made the same test drive as in the video.. no smoke that I could see..also with the PCV / ccv disconnected it seem I have a slight negative pressure on the oil filler cap .
Then I checked the axial play in the turbo and it was about 1 mm.. so the turbo can use some love.

We took a 5 day trip with the small bus to the outer banks and did some beach driving. Lots of good adventures.
But now back and working on the 404.
This morning did a cold start with -3 Celsius with a marginal battery and the motor started second try.. I have to wiggle the starter motor cable so something is awry but that is easy to fix.. the disconnected turbo spews quit a bit of oil and the engine has stopped producing smoke.
So now the sub frame ... The bus body is going to be hard coupled to the cab area for a full " walk thru"
The current remaining pivot support from an old radio box has a hard mount in the middle and pivot front and rear..
I am going to cut that apart and put the hard mount at the location of the first pivot and then have the two pivots behind that.
The second pivot ends up being right on top of tubular crossmember so I will have to offset to the front a little. Not great but so it is.. the hard mount will interfere with the second file tank that is currently not mounted.. so there will be some frame twist between the hard cab mount and the new body hard body mount.. I will bolt it up first and then see how much twist there actually is.

Small progress, got a air intake manifold from a later model VW TDI. It has an integrated butterfly valve that I will use as shutdown Incase of a runaway engine.
This intake has another advantage that accepts airflow from the front.. that makes easier plumbing of the intercooler.
Next was modifying the frame pivot points from pivot...solid ..pivot to solid ..pivot..pivot.
Unfortunately the now center pivot interferes with the chassis crossmember.. originally I thought moving it backward.. now I see that it would need a 3/4" spacer to clear the crossmember.. so the vehicle would become 3/4" higher.. don't like it but it is less work.. will see

Wow almost a year ago..the donor had become a shed for all kinds of stuff. Cleaned that out and unbolted and cut the last attachment from the body to chassis of the Econoline.
Today I made a wooden structure under the roof to lift the body of the chassis with our forklift.. we have 6 ft extensions...they will go thru the side windows. The idea being that this is more stable and easier to work on the floor of the bus.. time will tell
It is snowing here now so it will be another couple of days before I will make a first attempt.
