    Maps.me with CarPlay, display issue

Anyone using maps.me with Apple CarPlay? Recently, I assume there was some update to either maps.me or CarPlay, maps.me has started showing a big navigation popup only on the car display. If I just want to see the map, and not “navigate” I can’t dismiss the popup, which blocks a lot of the map...

    Rooftop solar question

So we just bought a van, our first since a 1985 Vanagon Westy that we sold in 1994. Since then, have owned mostly pickups and one LC80. Anyway, our new van is a high roof Transit, 9’ tall even if we don’t end up lifting it and/or mounting bigger tires. And in the first 500 miles, including...

    Basic van buildout questions

After decades of mostly tent camping, out of cars, SUV’s and lately pickups, with brief detours into a pop-top Westfalia, a FlipPac, and a soft RTT, plus a fair amount of motorcycle camping and a few backpacking trips, we have recently ordered a van. The goal is to have secure, weatherproof...

    Dometic PLB40 battery

I currently have no demand for electricity in camp except a few watts to charge my phone or headlamp. But I’m thinking of getting a 12V fridge and have started looking at options. This new Dometic battery sounds interesting; not cheap but light and small for its capacity, and I assume being...

    Liquid stove storage/transport

So as I mentioned thinking about in another thread, I picked up a used Coleman 413H 2 burner white gas stove, after about 20 years of using a propane 2 burner with 1lb disposable cylinders. When I had my previous Coleman white gas stove, I don’t really remember how I stored them in the cars or...

    A few days in Baja

Although I've done a fair amount of off-pavement travel in the US and Canada, on two and four wheels, I can't say I'm any kind of overlander. And last week's trip certainly wasn't anything daring or rugged, so I hesitated before starting a new thread about what was really just another road trip...

Pro's and con's of mounting RTT below cab height?

I posted a question about removing my shell (topper) in another thread, and just going "open bed", but I'm particularly interested in doing so to lower my RTT (Tepui soft shell) which is currently mounted on top of my cab-high shell. I'd probably want to use my existing crossbars mounted at or...

Opinions please - camper shell or open bed?

I have a double-cab short bed Tacoma, first double-cab pickup after 3 extended cabs. Used for everything from daily driver to extended camping trips in the Western US. I bought it with a shell, and recently added an RTT which I've already used about 20 times. I wanted the double-cab specifically...

    RTT secret hiding spot

If you've folded up your tent, after carefully checking the gear pockets for anything important like a cellphone, wallet or keys, also check between the inner window coverings and the screens, if the window coverings were rolled down at night. Best to do this before driving 50 miles back to the...

Hard shell RTT with ladder on rear

I'm looking at a used JB Discovery Space tent. Well, I'm planning to go look at it, have only seen pictures so far. Anyway, I'd be mounting this on a shell on a DCSB Tacoma, 60" bed/shell. Assuming I center it on the shell or bias it slightly forward of center, the rear door will require setting...

    Full current switch vs relay?

This isn't exactly a power question but i figured I'd get some good input from the electrical gurus here. I have a portable ARB compressor (single) which I'm finally going to mount onboard, under the hood. I'm going to run tankless (slow, I know) and so will only use it when stopped, hood open...

High mount 3rd tail light for FlipPac?

Anyone installed one, and/or any suggestions on a good surface mount light, preferably LED? I think they're a good safety feature. Edit: I mean brake light, of course.

DC or AC- specifically suicide doors vs regular doors

I've read reams of opinions on the DC vs AC question, but I've never read an owner's perspective on the value of the suicide doors. Specifically, if you don't need the double cab for passengers,do the suicide doors enable loading larger items (like bikes or big gear boxes) into the rear, or is...

    FlipPac mattress and "gap cover"

So my Flip didn't come with a mattress, but we've been using 3" thick tri-fold futon we have that fits perfectly footprint-wise, and is comfortable, but is too thick to leave in place when folding up. What thickness works, and does anyone have a good recommendation for light but comfortable (and...

    FlipPac "re-sizing"

Has anyone looked into (or actually done) re-sizing the lower shell of a FP to fit a slightly different bed size. I like my T100 but really hanker for a newer modern truck. Either a Tacoma or ?? As far as I know the T100 shell would fit a 1st gen Tundra and maybe a Dakota but not much else. To...

Quick 3.4V6 oil filler cap question

After a year of owning it, I noticed that my T100 seems to weep quite a bit of oil around the filler cap. More than I'm used to with other vehicles. There's a groove that might be for an O-ring molded into the cap ... should it have one? Mine has no O-ring or washer. Thanks in advance - dman93

    BBC story on Toyota trucks

I thought this was pretty good for the mainstream press (read past the mtn bike intro to see the Toyota content): http://www.bbc.com/autos/story/20141201-meet-canadas-gravity-warriors (Sorry if it's a re-post but a quick search didn't show anything) -dman93
