Thanks RAM5500, the brackets are fold out side steps. They're just about as high as the fenders but better than stepping on the actual fenders and work as a nice little ladder to access the roof rack. I'm not sure they we're totally necessary (like many jeep accessories...) but they do come in...

I've had my Yakima roof rack with two mountain bikes on the roof. Super stable when closed, and fine when open and locked with the bar inside, but took a little extra effort to get it opened up with the bikes still on there. That was ~80lbs, and at least with the stock struts I wouldn't have...

If your dog is less antsy and wiggly than mine, maybe. But it will be a super tight fit. I'm 6'1, with 5'7 wife and there is really only a bit of extra space at our feet. It's really not wide enough for 3 across Our 60lb rottweiler mix sleeps downstairs on the backseat. I wouldn't want to heave...
