FG53EC Ex-firetruck Camper build. Help, advice needed.

The 60% rule is pretty reasonable. When I shipped my vehicle to Australia, it was slightly <60% without the spare tire, slightly >with spare. But the place where I got the temporary permit was forgiving because it’s a foreign vehicle and also it was just the tire.

BFG MT vs Falken Wildpeak AT4: Sidewall Toughness

As a gross generalization, “taller” tires - higher aspect ratio, therefore on the smallest wheels that will fit over brakes, are best, for sidewall protection and best ride off highway, and most able to take advantage off highway of significant deflation to improve ride, traction and flotation...

BFG MT vs Falken Wildpeak AT4: Sidewall Toughness

Admittedly big Unimog tires, but thinking about pressure decrease as a percentage rather than throwing out numbers like “60” and “20”, which are totally application dependent, might be more universally relevant. The lower the aspect ratio, the less pressure decrease is appropriate. Beadlocks are...

MB truck owners in North America - is it worth it?

I think a very important decision branch point is: are you going to use it exclusively in North America (Mexico’s a gray zone, recently found out there’s MAN dealers there, for instance); or are you going to venture to other continents, especially Africa and Eurasia (a lot of the latter is...

MB truck owners in North America - is it worth it?

Since you’re in Canada, the real “pinnacle” MB truck (other than a Unimog) would be an 1828 Atego. From the 2000-06 era; not the earlier trucks with the 366 engines. Modern, reliable engine (906LA with 286 hp, ~820 ft-lb, superlong oil change intervals up to 1200h/60k km), maybe an autoshifting...

Unimog 404 camper bus tdi diesel conversion

Impressive. Which VW motor? Does transmission have low speed gears? What axle/portal net ratio and top gear ratio vs what size tires?

Great find on the wheels, bookmarked the City Racer site, will probably replace the wagon wheels that came with my OJ50 Bandeirante. Running on 8.25R16 Michelin XZLs (33.9”).

    Unimog demand

Let me be more specific: if you decrease wheelbase by 520mm, then taking overhang into account, habitat must be about 1000mm shorter. If 820mm shorter, then habitat 1.5-1.6m shorter. A 3.2m habitat…might as well get a Landcruiser (HZJ or VZJ79) pickup with a camping rear and rooftop tent.

    Unimog demand

I have a UGN camper: on a long wheelbase (3900mm) U500. This appears to be on a short wheelbase (3350mm U400 or even shorter 3080mm U300) and offers less room inside and less stability for only slight increase in maneuverability. I ordered my U500 new and rapidly discarded the idea of ordering...

    Is a 3-axle HZJ79 a good idea?

Is it a good idea? I’d want a LOT MORE information on exactly how the 6x6 works.

    Locker or manual lockout hubs

I’d get the DCDL for sure if it’s available. But a lot more important question: is a REAR DCDL or automatic locker (NoSpin) available? Because anytime you engage a front DCDL you won’t be able to steer, it’ll just go mainly forwards unless the surface has a very low coefficient of friction. So I...

This https://unicatexpeditionvehicles.com/2023/04/14/second-hand-ex74hdc-mb-actros-6x6/ is a bit more (€880k) than half the asking price of the HD! Difficult to register even in Canada (2014 chassis), but 6x6, raising roof and even CTIS*, only 45k miles. I’d never want something this big, but...

Buying bead lock super singles and need advice

It sounds like it’s either an F550 or Isuzu/Fuso type vehicle. There aren’t many of those around compared to say Jeeps or other “mass-market” type vehicles. So IMHO the probability someone would have any use for super singles of that particular size is much lower. But a general principle is...

Buying bead lock super singles and need advice

Perhaps be more specific: Are the wheels mass market size (17-18”) for a popular type vehicle (SUV/pickup), ex-military (20” with >10k lb load capacity), or in between like 19.5-20” for F550 or Isuzu/Fuso? Is your concern parking in front of your residence, parking at a trailhead for a several...

    15 used Earth Roamers

I couldn’t agree more. For $1.8M you can get a 6x6 Unicat (MAN or MB factory heavy truck chassis complete with CTIS etc etc) with tons of features unobtainable on the HD. But all way too big for decent mobility. Multiple places I went last month…a vehicle 400mm taller (16”) and 3-4m (10-13’)...
