MTB vs Touring for Eastern US

As a mountain biker who lives on the east coast, I'll insert my highly biased assertion that the mountain bike is always the correct answer. If you can swing it, a second set of wheels with slicks for asphalt duty is all you need in life. If you make it to Vermont, check out Kingdom Trails...

Over the River and Through the Woods (of Northern VT)

Day 4: Apparently, giant barn murals are a thing out here. This is just one of many on the route. Nearing the end of our dirt road odyssey, jut before the weather turned on us again. Back to Burlington in the rain, tired and soaked, after 240 some miles and over 20,000 feet of climbing.

Over the River and Through the Woods (of Northern VT)

Day 3: While shorter on miles, Day 3 brought us more Class 4 gnar in a downpour, an absurdly steep climb up to Lincoln Gap, followed by clearing skies for a wicked descent into Middlebury.

Over the River and Through the Woods (of Northern VT)

Day 2: The route is advertised as 70% unpaved. We came for the dirt, of course, but a break from the constant pounding is sometimes nice. That said, it's tough to complain about roads like these. Making good on the promise of liquid refreshment at Hill Farmstead Brewery. To call it a...

Over the River and Through the Woods (of Northern VT)

I'll start by noting how fortunate I am to have such gullible friends. These adventures always starts as a thinly veiled invitation to suffer. Sure guys! I'm insisting you follow me into the wilderness for a pleasant weekend of enlightenment through austerity. Something like that. For a...

    VHF/UHF HT for emergency use?

Some research into my own question w.r.t. cross band repeating - Some lovely diagrams from qsl.net And corresponding text description: http://www.qsl.net/wb3gck/cbr.htm I found this quite helpful in getting my head around the whole thing. Noted issues with this are: Having the mobile...

    VHF/UHF HT for emergency use?

Currently marooned in southeast PA, likely moving to CT in a couple weeks. I tend to spend a fair bit of time in the Green Mountains of VT and the White Mountains of NH, with an occasional trip out west. Hoping to get out on Rainier this summer.

    VHF/UHF HT for emergency use?

Thanks for all of the input! Looks like I have much to learn here. The conversation soundly illustrates (for me, anyhow) how little knowledge is required to pass the tech. exam vs. all that there is to possibly know. Recently picked up a little FT-70, so I guess I just need to go take a hike...

    VHF/UHF HT for emergency use?

I recently got my technician license, thinking amateur radio would be a fun/"useful" hobby (marginal utility is a great excuse for some spiffy new gear). As someone who spends a good bit of time out of the vehicle, on foot, in the mountains, etc., I'm wondering how useful a V/UHF handheld would...

Best station wagon for expedition other than Subaru?

The Volvo V70 XC wagons would likely meet your criteria. Lots of interior space, all wheel drive, quite a bit of ground clearance, plenty of power with the 5 cylinder turbo engine. They are rather pricey new, but as with all things European-luxury, can be snatched up cheap once they have a few...

Thanks all for riding along! I am now very much enjoying my new role as an armchair explorer, reading reports from Dan Grec, Lightcycle and the rest of our little tribe.

    Clutch & Gearbox woes

My own rover exists as a stack of cardboard boxes, but I once had an old VW that behaved in a similar manner. Turned out that the seals on the clutch slave cylinder were slowly dying. Leakage rate and subsequent line pressure would fluctuate with temperature. The root of the issue became...

    Adrift in Space

Epilogue//Interstellar Meditation Ultimately, it's all about time and space. No known beginning. No foreseeable end. Somehow, there is never enough. Constrained and cramped by infinity. Enjoying a fantastic show of lights, a few miles from the Alaska-Canada border. The older folks at...

iluvdirt: California is indeed, amazing! I did manage to spend the better part of a week in Death Valley, way back in January, followed by a couple of days in Joshua Tree, and oh so briefly stopped in Anza Borrego just a couple months ago (was still rather hot, or I'd have stayed longer). That...

Navigation for Bikepacking: GPS units, Phone Apps, Maps and Route Files

I think I have had it for about two years now. I have not had it down to -4 as of yet, but it works great in the cold. Starts getting a bit squirrelly above 85 or so. I thought it might be a display setting (auto dimming or something), but no luck.

Navigation for Bikepacking: GPS units, Phone Apps, Maps and Route Files

I'm using a Garmin eTrex 20x as well. Using the supplied belt clip thingy, I've managed to strap mine to the stem of the bike with the folded up remains of an old tube as a damper-cushion. I bought mine bundled with some kind of supplemental street map package (I've forgotten which one, will...

Yup, you are approximately my parents' age. Interestingly (or perhaps not), the majority of the folks I meet in my travels have been a good bit older than I. Your generation, plus or minus a few years. I'll take that as inspiration to keep moving as I too get older! A lot of people my own...
