    Gen 3 front end rebuild

I bought this rebuild kit from Rock auto. http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=5734899&cc=1432571&jsn=8 Should I be changing out all of the bolts too? Or can I reuse 11 year old hardware? Also it comes with the ball joints in it already. These don't have grease fittings in them now...

    Gen III transmission

So I did something that may seem foolish but I've done this with every car I've ever owned and never had a problem. Driving my 2006 Montero, I was coasting down a grade and slipped the truck into neutral. Then I switched the ignition from run to Acc. This usually does nothing,(except save...

    Gen III Ball Joints

I have the FSM download for the torque specs but I have a quick question. Do I need to pull the axle from the hub to do the ball joints? I think I can just keep the brakes and axle attached to the knuckle to disassemble. Any one done this on their Gen III?

    Border to Border

Has anyone caught this on the sportsman's channel? The concept and the rig are very cool but I never like it when someone on an epic adventure whines about how hard it is to be on the road... boo hoo... your living the dream. Does Mike have a presence on this forum?

    Would better tires have helped

So I went hunting last night and parked off the road. When I went to back out I came straight back in the tracks I made coming in but the snow had softened and I slid perfectly sideways into the ditch. I was amazed how easily it slid sideways. I wish I had pictures of the tracks in the...

    NH Gen 3 build

Well I went and bought a Gen 3! I thought I was going to get a Gen 2.5 but after hours of searching craigslist and cars.com followed by more hours reading this forum, I received some good advice and sound reasoning from Montypower and decided to get a newer vehicle with less miles. So here it...

    Montero vs TLC 100

Two craigslist ads...which would you choose? The Montero is very clean and only 126,000 miles. But the KBB for it is much less than the asking. The land cruiser has both front and rear lockers and is almost as clean. More miles on the LC and it's not a one owner vehicle. So which would you...

    Good Buy? 98 LC

Hello, I'm looking at a 1998 TLC 100 with front and rear lockers with 175,000 miles on the odometer. No winch, lift or bumpers but it looks pretty clean. I'm a little worried about that many miles. Should I be worried? How reliable is the 4.7? Timing belt interval? For this kind of money...

    Tubeless 29er tires

My most excellent wife was able to score me a great deal on a new Santa Cruz Superlight 29er. It came with tubed Maxxis Crossmark tires. The rims are WTB i19 Tubeless compatible. I live in New Hampshire and mostly ride local trails which have a little bit of everything. Typical east coast...

    XLS vs Limited

I've finally decided that I want the reliability and comfort of a gen III. I also think it's best to go with the most modern engine the 3.8L. So I'm looking at 2003 to 2006 Montero's for overlanding the class VI roads in New England. I'll probably add 33's and some protection and storage and...

    Lift Gate or door?

Hello, I recently bought a 2000 Jeep XJ and was thinking of building it into an expo rig. One thing I've noticed is that I don't really like driving this thing long distances, so it got me thinking that while the XJ is a very capable off road vehicle, I'm not sure it's the best at getting to...

Going to look at this one tomorrow

The dealer is changing the timing belt and going over the whole thing this weekend so that is included in the sales price. What do you think? I'm still on the fence on a 2.5 vs the gen III debate. This one looks like it has the 4 speed transmission and no locker. That's kind of a bummer cuz...

    Montero vs Trooper

I had been thinking about a 92 to 97 Trooper since I first read Scott's ringing endorsement of the vehicle. I'm having trouble sourcing one here in New England so I've decided to expand my search to include Mitsubishi's. The problem I'm finding is there are so many variations of the Montero...

    Very Cool bicycle adventure

This guy just completed his RTW trip on a tandem with the back seat open for anyone that wanted to join the adventure for awhile. Sounds very cool. 22 countries in Africa alone :Wow1: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/peacepedalers/peace-pedalers-africa-22-countries-2-years-12-epis?ref=video

    Blown Trooper engine

I found a nice 99 Trooper with a blown engine locally for $900 Obo. I've done numerous timing belt changes and transmission changes so I'm pretty comfortable with doing all my own mechanical work. Has anyone here ever rebuilt their blown up 3.5 engine? I'm just looking to see how much work is...

    4 door Long bed???

Quick question I'm looking for a 4 door tacoma, but I want one with the long bed. How can I quickly determine bed length on Craigslist or Auto trader. Even with the pictures it's tough to see. Is there an identifier in the VIN that shows long vs short bed. It seems most I see are short...

    1994 Land Cruiser

I'm looking at a 94 Cruiser and on the rear it says "full time 4wd" Is that true or can it be run in 2wd to save fuel on the highway. I will be driving this from New Hampshire to the midwest this fall on a bird hunting excursion. I'm thinking of pulling out both rows of seats and building a...
