Our story in choosing an Exped Vehicle and Builder.

Hi - just read your first three blogs on how you decided upon a truck and a builder. Very interesting. I have to ask: what is coat-tailing? Not a term we use down here in Australia... Thanks for posting. Cheers - David

Prepping a defender 130 for around the world..

Have you thought about the reduction in airflow across the radiator due to your spotlights? If you 're not going anywhere hot, it probably doesn't matter, but in Australia, in summer, we get overheating issues when you do this with spotlights... You could probably lose the central spotlight...

Source and cost to convert dual-tires to singels on a MB lorry

Sounds the same as my setup. I've got Bridgestone M748 tyres, and when the rims were fabricated, they had to weld up all the holes on a 10 stud rim, and then re-drill them for the MAN 8 stud pattern. Out here (Australia) most trucks are Japanese, and they run 10 studs.

Source and cost to convert dual-tires to singels on a MB lorry

I bought my MAN with dual rear tyres, and converted it to super singles. It came from the factory with 22.5 rims and 11 inch wide tyres (i.e 11R22.5). I got custom rims made up at 12.75 inches wide and 22.5 inches diameter. This is the standard rim size for super singles (385/65R22.5) and for...

    FG84 Camper Build

Hi Maninga - only just discovered this thread, so I've just read through all 19 pages of it. Nice build! I see you've gone down the same road as me on a few things, like the toilet. That is an excellent little unit. We went away for 8 weeks (2 people) and only had to empty the front 'liquid'...

Michelin XZL 395/85 R20 on Iveco Eurocargo

Hi Charlie, I have a 9.5 tonne MAN truck, with the weights at approx 4.5 tonnes on the front axle and 5 tonnes on the rear axle. Our tyres are 425/85 R22.5. We run 65PSI front and rear on bitumen. 50PSI for dirt roads. And 25PSI for sand. I'll do some conversions into Bar in a sec. For some...

MAN LE10 Camper on the Telegraph Track Cape York Australia

We had to do a bit of 'pruning' up near Broome (WA). We have something like this on board:

MAN LE10 Camper on the Telegraph Track Cape York Australia

Nice work! Did you have trouble getting through on parts of the track? I've not been up to the tip, but I gather there are lots of narrow parts on the track, and some of the creek crossings look very hairy, like Gunshot Creek crossing: and narrow bridges, like this: Or, is there an...

    MAN 4x4 Truck camper build

Hi Dennis, Would be very interested to see what you have built, so you better post up some photos! I am guessing that an MAN LE10 is an earlier version of my type of truck.... If you start a new thread, be sure to post a link to it here. Cheers David

New member from Norway, soon to have a new truck!

An old thread, I know, but I was wondering if someone can link the "follow on" thread to this one from julius0377. This one seems to be all about the decision to buy, and I thought there might be another thread about some of Julius' travels. Thanks David BTW - Julius, I have a MAN 4x4 camper...

Also, if you are interested in how the composting toilet worked, see here: Composting-Toilet-Feedback Just a heads up - there is a picture of 2 months worth of 'compost' so turn away now if that's too much for you :)

    MAN 4x4 Truck camper build

I've finally got around to making a blog post and a video about our 8 week holiday to the Kimberleys, up in the far north of Western Australia. The video's got a mix of landscapes, the truck and people (mainly us!) and it'll give you a good idea of how things look up that way. As a quick one...

    MAN 4x4 Truck camper build

Very observant of fugly!! Yes, I have listed it for sale to see what the interest is. Got a call on the first day from a bloke in Wollongong (2,000 Kms away) who said he'd like to come down and check it out, so that was positive. I have got 2 plans in mind. 1; My son is working in Oxford...

    MAN 4x4 Truck camper build

I know it's out of sequence, but I remembered that I hadn't posted anything about the awning/sunshade I made, and this morning I put it up for the first time to keep things cooler in the 32 degree Broome sun. It is made from truck vinyl and shadecloth, in a very simple wind up/down design...

    MAN 4x4 Truck camper build

This is quite a belated post to say we are on our way. Actually, we are 3 weeks into our 8 week trip and currently sitting in Fitzroy Crossing, in the middle of a desert, near the top of Australia. Not all that many spots with internet connectivity out this way!! So far we have done just over...

    MAN 4x4 Truck camper build

Thanks for the photo. Looks like the tabs are now twice as thick, so hopefully they'll last twice as long! I've still got to do my rear plates. That's a job for later this week.

    MAN 4x4 Truck camper build

Thanks. They were pretty simple to make once I'd worked out the maths on making them level when open, and fold flat when closed. I used 3mm aluminium sheet in some sort of structural grade. I can't remember the number, but they use it for making the hulls of boats. The side rails are also...

    MAN 4x4 Truck camper build

Made some steps last weekend, to make it easier to get in/out of the canopy. The ladder is OK if you're not carrying anything, but steps make it much easier. I cut out 4 steps on the plasma cutter, putting in perforations to make them non-slip. The steps sit on 2 rails and pivot, which makes...
