Backcountry Trip Report - Fortune Creek Trail, NE LT Murray and Cle Elum Ridge

Sunday morning I finished up Moonlight Canyon and then did Skull Spring, the Cle Elum Ridge Loop (FS 3350 and 3352) and was just about to head home as I was feeling pretty darn tired. Then I made an ill-fated spur of the moment decision to use a "short-cut" discovered via Nokia Maps. This...

Backcountry Trip Report - Fortune Creek Trail, NE LT Murray and Cle Elum Ridge

Saturday morning I packed up and headed to the LT Murray Wildlife Area after picking up breakfast at Cle Elum's Sunset Cafe. Oh and I drove by 4 grouse off of FS 4330 (I ended up seeing 14 during the trip plus two mule deer... grouse season opens 9/1). I drove Shadow Creek, Morrison Canyon...

Backcountry Trip Report - Fortune Creek Trail, NE LT Murray and Cle Elum Ridge

After calming down a bit I decided to continue on towards the lake... but no more getting out of the vehicle until this lightning calms down! I plodded along slowly but surely, eventually crossing FS 160 and working the the upper section of 4W301/Fortune Creek Trail. Pretty close to the lake I...

Backcountry Trip Report - Fortune Creek Trail, NE LT Murray and Cle Elum Ridge

The Fortune Creek Trail (4W301) proved immediately challenging from a ground clearance perspective. But carefully choosing my line and keeping the speed down proved effective and I was making it up just fine, even after it started pouring down rain. Eventually I came to a large, rock...

Backcountry Trip Report - Fortune Creek Trail, NE LT Murray and Cle Elum Ridge

With the wife and kids out of town for a few days I decided to do some driving and camping alone in EWA this past weekend. I Hit Wenatchee National Forest on Friday with the intent of making it to Gallagher Head Lake via the Fortune Creek Trail in my humble, stock Mitsubishi Endeavor SLS...

what things have you replaced with others and are happier :)

Replaced a $15 Therm-A-Rest RidgeRest foam sleeping pad with a $200 Exped MegaMat air/foam sleeping pad. Significantly improved sleep and comfort has been worth every penny of that price difference.

are rtt the next "must have" item?

Yes, I suspect RTTs have surpassed snorkels and drawer-mounted Partner stoves as THE must have item for the modern exposexual... not that there is anything wrong with that! Seems most people that have them absolutely love them. Cee-Jay PS: I have a Partner stove.

    Camp Stereo

Macworld has a nice little review of 9 rugged Bluetooth speakers designed for outdoor use here. In summary: * Braven BRV-1 and Philips's Shoqbox offer great combination of ruggedness, portability and sound quality with Scoosche's Boombottle being a good option for cyclists * EcoXBT is a great...

    Any bird hunters?

Nice pics, folks! I do a little bit of waterfowl and upland hunting (mostly pheasant and quail) in eastern Washington every year. I also get out occasionally for grouse, though usually it is more of a car-camping trip exploring rough roads during which we hope to kick up a grouse or two kind...

    Partner Stoves?

Ha, well of course it is not a hard problem to fix... but at that price it shouldn't be an issue in the first place. Nothing is perfect, but those seem like fairly obvious oversights to me. In retrospect, I'd have been better off with a much cheaper, less durable unit. I need a stove that can...

Looking for a new Expedition vehicle and can't decide, Help :)

Seriously, based on your requirements it sounds like a van or a crossover could easily meet your needs at lower cost and with better mpg, comfort and road manners. They may not be cool, but they are often a very practical solution; you might be suprised where they can get you. The FJ's a...

    Partner Stoves?

I agree and I disagree. The knobs on my Partner stove are pretty sticky, making precise adjustments difficult. Also, the lack of simple indicator markings on the unit make it difficult to know where the lowest setting is (before the flame goes out) or to use consistent settings each time.

    Options for plates?

We use the GSI Cascadian Set, which includes four color-coded plates, cups and bowls for around $20. They are lightweight, durable, quiet, easy to wipe clean (no soap or water necessary most of the time), dishwasher safe and the colors help folks remember which plate belongs to them. The...

Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

My buddies and I almost always have quite a few guns around when we are back country camping, but mostly that's because we plan to target shoot and/or hunt. At night when we go to sleep, most of my friends and I usually keep the firearms locked up in the vehicles. I bring knives too, but not...
