I'm with BillieBob on the tent trailer. My first trailer was a $900 Scamp that I flipped the axles on and added 15" wheels. I hunted and fished out of that thing for almost 10 years, then sold it for $900.
I'm building a teardrop with a typical leaf spring set up (spring under). I plan to add shocks and wonder what the best placement is - forward or aft of the axle? Does it matter?
What are you plans to seal the luan? I think if it's sealed well you should have no problem. You could also run a thin bead of silicone to cover the gap too. I've been wondering if there is a better solution than the butyl tape. Maybe closed cell foam?

Lots of good camping options between Montrose and Gunnison. Owl Creek Pass over to SilverJack Reservoir is nice. Plenty of side roads north of Blue Mesa to explore too. I don't know much about Grand Mesa, but bring lots of bug spray!
