The Heart of the West Loop

For some reason, retired geologists seem to find their way to HoW more than any other professional group. Speaking as the progenitor of a geology major, I've decided it's a DNA thing. And Dale, the Mackay, Idaho area is an all-time favorite, an ideal venue for multiday backroad, hiking and...

The Heart of the West Loop

It was a pleasure to at last meet you all, after so much planning. I know your journey was a long time in the works, with important obstacles to overcome (Covid, wildfires, heat, life ...). Heart of the West Adventure Route is a true, 21st-century American West expedition, not to be taken...

    ARB Fridge "Clunk"

Following up ... The replacement compressor arrived. The box showed no damage, but the delivery guy wasn't as easy setting it down as I would have wanted. But heck, it is an off-roady fridge. It is working well. The solid clunking noise is absent. Some minor sounds come from it now and then, but...

    ARB Fridge "Clunk"

After a week passed without word from ARB, I called and left a message with a tech support person. Soon thereafter I received an email from ARB stating that it would promptly ship a replacement fridge, with a return label for the defective one. No hassle at all! (Good that I'd sent a video/audio...

    ARB cords and fridge mods

ARB just notified me they've shipped a replacement fridge and return label for the defective one, no hassle at all. I had submitted a warranty claim on the ARB website, including my video/audio illustrating the problem. This is great customer service! The problem was the Secop-brand compressor.

Perfect! Thank you. I can even hear the same sound (@2:35, for example) that I hear as he jiggles the motor around in the cutaway tank.

    ARB cords and fridge mods

Thanks for that. I did determine after much analysis that the source of the "clunk" is just what you state: the motor in the fridge has come loose inside the tank and is hitting the insides of the tank. It cools fine, and has run quietly for nearly three years. This is recent, in the past few...

    ARB cords and fridge mods

It does help, and thank you for responding. I will post ARB's response when I hear back. For some time I assumed it was a rear suspension clunk, that's how loud it is. When I rode in the back with my wife driving, it clearly was coming from iinside the empty fridge. I can feel with my fingers...

    ARB cords and fridge mods

Has anyone dealt with the Secop compressor motor inside the black tank coming loose and banging around? Mine recently did, and it is a loud and annoying clunking. No problems till now, two months shy of warranty expiration. I'm currently waiting to hear from ARB, altho posters elsewhere say...

    ARB Fridge "Clunk"

The problem with the "Classic" ARB Fridge Freezer and others that use spring-mounted compressors (typically made by Secop/Danfoss) inside a sealed black tank is that some come loose from the springs, and thus bang into the wall of the tank with every bump in the road. In my case, the "clunk"...

Howdy, Ace! Tony Huegel here, of Heart of the West ADV Route. Thank you for the effort last summer. I hope '21 goes better. I have a SmugMug photo gallery depicting the route, which I provide so travelers can evaluate it. I would be happy to share it. To do so requires email addresses for the...

Sand ladders for a 15 ton overland truck???

I used to carry a pair of those grate things. I found them heavy, difficult to store, splintery, much too short and generally useless. They're visible in the rut below ...

Sand ladders for a 15 ton overland truck???

Lots of traction aids out there, it appears. But not much for bridging washouts, severe ruts, etc., which for us is a frequent problem. Sad!

Sand ladders for a 15 ton overland truck???

I have been searching unsuccessfully for years for suitable bridging ladders that are practical, packable and affordable. You'd think that with all the fabricators in the off-roading market these days, someone would see the opportunity. I've never needed traction mats, but I have many times had...

Cargo Boxes - Why you do. Why you don't

It looks as though your box is resting on the multiple flat cross rails in your cargo rack. Is that correct? If so, that may distribute the weight and stresses better than if it were mounted on only two cross rails, as is typical.

Cargo Boxes - Why you do. Why you don't

Odd thing is, my old unfashionable Sears clamshell box worked perfectly for many hard seasons. Shoulda kept it ... In the meantime ... I have 2 roof baskets (Yakima) that are good, but provide no convenient "civilization" parking-lot security. Looking for ideas for securing storage boxes ...

Cargo Boxes - Why you do. Why you don't

One gets what one pays for. And it's about the cost if many things we spend money on to do this thing. Hell, a set of tires is nearly $1,000 and won't last me more than three seasons.

Cargo Boxes - Why you do. Why you don't

Thanks for that idea! I did some reading, and it seems Packasport makes a good product but isn't a well-run company ... some fulfillment and customer-service probs. But those wouldn't be issues with a used one. I'll keep an eye out. Just hard to believe some engineer-ish entrepreneur hasn't...
