    The Dometic CFX3 Mega Thread

I’m having the same issue. Haven’t used the fridge in about 6 months. My app was working before but it disappeared, so I re downloaded it again and nothing happens. It shows as connected through WiFi and Bluetooth, but nothing happens all I can do is dismiss the connection screen. I looked...

Upgrade my Subaru Outback or trade it in?

I also think the best option is to trade it in. I also went through a similar decision, and if your goal is to tackle harder trails the Subaru will always be limited in its capabilities. The main drawbacks are always going to be the lack of low range, the independent suspension, and the limits...

    Fireroad exploring vehicle ?

A Subaru would fit most of those requirements if he's willing to leave one of the kids at home, otherwise it's too small. With 2 out of the 3 kids in car seats a 3rd row is almost a necessity, and if you want any cargo capacity for camping you'd need something larger than a standard SUV. I...

Does this belong here? Rechargeable flashlight recommendations

For a primary light, I'd recommend an 18650, USB rechargeable headlamp. Whatever a flashlight will do, a headlamp will do better. I'd recommend something with multiple brightness levels, capable of 1000+ lumens or more. You don't always need to run at the highest brightness level, but it's...

    Towing a 16ft Airstream with a 4runner? Other alternatives?

I've towed with a GX460, which is essentially a V8 4runner. If I was planning on towing more than a few times a year, I'd probably get something bigger. Even though it's technically rated for 6500 lbs, you wouldn't want to tow anywhere close to that for long periods of time. Your mileage will...

    The Dometic CFX3 Mega Thread

Just picked up the CFX3 45L fridge during the labor day sale. I've had it for about 2 days and I'm already having problems with it. I tested it on AC for a day and it worked fine. Today I moved it in the car and seems like there are a lot of issues. It's running on a 100Ah LifeP04 battery...

Is a RTT or ground tent better for my use?

As a RTT owner, I'd say definitely go with a ground tent unless you have a trailer to put the RTT on. A RTT offers no advantages when base camping and doing day trips, but has a lot of disadvantages.

Dual-Input (alternator + solar) Dual Output Charge Controllers?

I have the Renogy 30A dual input controller. I posted some of my thoughts in a previous thread somewhere on this forum. There were a few reasons I went with a dual input controller 1. Space. Originally I purchased a DC/DC charger and solar MPPT. This required extra space under an already...

Best $200 (or less) Tool Kit for College Student?

Is this tool kit for roadside repairs or basic maintenance? I'm assuming since it's going to be kept in the car it's mainly for emergency repairs. In that case I'd just go with very simple basic tools, you're not gonna be changing a head gasket or swapping axles on the side of the highway. I...

Best $200 (or less) Tool Kit for College Student?

x2. What’s her skill level? And what’s her motivation to fix it? A fully stocked garage won’t help if she doesn’t know how to or want to fix it. In most cases for a young college student a Leatherman tool and AAA card would be a lot more useful than a tool kit that has a higher probability of...

Best value these days: 4Runner or GX460?

GX used to be a better value. You'd get the V8, luxury features, and usually a better maintained/less abused vehicle for a lower price compared to the 4runner. But seems like the secret is out and the GX resale value has shot up significantly in the last few years where the prices are now...

Why so many negative YouTube videos about RTTs?

Because controversial titles get emotional reactions, and reactions get views. It's the internet One thing I've noticed was when RTT started to become popular, there were a lot of opinions on them, and the most vocal ones were from people who had never owned or used a RTT. Whenever the topic...

    LiFeP04 charge controller recommendations

This is what the app screen looks like. It just gives basic information like how much power (volts + amps) are coming from each source and how much is going to each battery. There are little arrow between each icon which show the direction of flow similar to the dash of an EV car. However...

    LiFeP04 charge controller recommendations

Tried it, didn't work for me. I posted my experience earlier in this thread. In theory it should work, and it sounds like other people have made it work. I was hoping it would be that simple, but I guess if all it took was hooking up a cheap boost converter to a MPPT then specific DC/DC...

    LiFeP04 charge controller recommendations

So far I'm satisfied with the Renogy. There are things that could be improved, but it works for my setup so I'm probably going to stay with it for now. Their bluetooth app is a little buggy and not as good as the Victron, but it gives me the basic information that I want to see. I have read...

    LiFeP04 charge controller recommendations

Another update on this. After trying a few different configurations, I eventually settled on the Renogy DCC30S. I started out using the Victron MPPT + Boost converter as a DC/DC charger, but I noticed some strange behavior with it. At some times, measuring with the Victron app, it would be...

    One-Man RTT Mount / Dismount?

I've tried various methods of installing/removing it solo. Using a tree/pully/winch, ladders, a custom built wooden ramp, an A-frame gantry with block and tackle, etc. You name it I've tried it. After all those tries, now I just call a friend to come over and help me lift it. Takes 5...

    DC/DC charger + Solar musings

What type of house battery do you have? If it's SLA then you can just connect straight to the starting battery with no controller. There will be some losses in the wire but it will work if you drive long enough. It's not the best way of doing it but it works. If it's a different type than...

Simple Lead Acid to Lithium Iron Phosphate

I recently switched over to LiFeP04 batteries and so far I am very happy with them. Twice the usable capacity, half the weight, charges much faster, and 10x the lifespan of SLA. The initial cost was hard for me to overcome at first, but when I did the cost per Ah calculations over it's...
