Ditto exactly what KellyM said. Including the I am not small part. We gave up on the interior hatches for general access long ago. It works OK if I am out by myself.

What JK specific tools do you carry?

Bailing wire, duct tape, and zip ties. Not exactly JKU specific but they always go with me.

I will try to participate, but I am in the Northbay (Santa Rosa) and its a bit of a hop to Sunol Ridge. The coverage map on the repeater group's website kind of confirms it. I did see that the the repeater system does have IRLP capability on its 2m rig. Do you know if the IRLP will be active...

We both sleep better with an extra pad. She uses a sea to summit mat, I use an REI pad.

It's a telescoping aluminum ladder. I think the brand name was Extend, available on Amazon. They are really tough on bare feet. Here is a thread on that subject, with my mod. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/127091-RTT-Ladder-Padding?p=2096726#post2096726 We use the ladder for...

Overland Navigation - Overview and Tutorial

Nice post! Perhaps you considered this, but for the route planning stage I use the My-Maps feature of Google maps to create routes. Create the route by using driving direction paths and the route will stick to roads. Its quite a bit quicker and much more accurate than creating a manual point...

    RTT Ladder Padding

I wanted to make sure that the bondo-mod would hold up over time. We just returned from a 2,500 mile expedition and the fix held up great even with a lot of bumping around in the back of the vehicle. Also, The ladder had no physical way of attaching to the vehicle, so I fabricated up a simple...

The other JKU has a James Baroud Evasion RTT sitting on a Gobi Rack. The J30 hands down won the setup and takedown timed challenge. The RTT has more head room and seemed a lot more comfortable to lounge around in during the day. The RTT could fit more stored gear (bags, pillows, pads, etc)...

A bit off topic but... There is a decent boundary map on the BLM website. At least it shows Townships and Ranges. If you compare the T&R information to a USGS Topo, you can see that the Aikens Mine Road is in the Preserve, and not in the new Monument. Hope that helps.

    RTT Ladder Padding

Today I filled the rills in with 3m Bondo and sanded it smooth. Now I have pink striped rungs. The home barefoot test feels much better. We shall see how it holds up.

Power: I had them add two outlets on top. I thought it was a little pricey but they did do a good job. (Next time I would do it myself.) I built my own lighting for the rear. It’s a LED strip on an aluminum heat sink mounted to the bottom edge of the upper tailgate glass panel. Works...

The people from Alu Cab got back to me on the Shadow Awning. Hi Charles, Apologies for the delay. I lost your mail, and had to reload all my mails. We had a look at the Awning and are very scared to actually recommend an install on Fiberglas tops. In our experience we found that the...

Fantastic !!! I have been waiting for John to finish yours to see how the brackets might work for my 1st Generation top. Now that he has it figured out I can start the process. Let us know how it performs. Vibration on the roads, etc.

Re the Alu-Cab awning Just to let you know, I have shared a couple of emails with the manufacturer. Do they have a USA distributer? No, but working on one Will it fit on my Jeep that has an Ursa Minor J30 top? They did not think the fiberglass top would be strong enough to support it. I am...

Ultralight and Bigfish have addressed the first question. I am in agreement with about everything they say. Additionally, my wife just didn’t feel comfortable either driving or riding in the big van along shelf roads with steep drop-offs. It was a “feeling” issue and maybe not 100% tangible...

I sold my '08 fully loaded SMB for the J30. There are some things the Jeep will do better, and some things I will always miss about the SMB. No regrets, just ... adjustments.
