    Rivan - Tank Turn

Couldnt agree more, it wont be that easy to find an EV fast charger or a normal wall plug where we all like to venture overland/offroad, nor will a small solar panel do. We are hoping to finish our first energy-autonomous 6x6 vehicle build by July/August to try and beat that challenge - with a...

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

Hi everyone, we have more updates about our project. We've been testing the prototype, both on and beyond the tarmac, and we're glad to report that it thoroughly exceeds expectations. Lots of fun to play around in the rugged landscape around the workshop with a Pinzgauer that has >1000 Nm of...

Two Rivian R1T being tested down in Tierra Del Fuego

Brilliant, can't wait for this to come out. I only wish it was on Netflix! It'll be good to see the Rivian in action in all kinds of different terrain and how they deal with recharging en route. And, yes, Alaska in winter will be tough on the batteries. In any case, it's extremely exciting...

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

Thanks for the pointer. Wow, these fuel cells are produced not too far from where we live, actually. We'd love to know more abut your friend's experience!

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

A quick update about where we are with our solar-electric conversion: while we're building the cabin and solar rig onto our 6x6, we're simultaneously developing the electric drive in a 4x4 - this is to avoid bottlenecks. We're very excited about the 4x4 prototype, which is now up and running...

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

Thank you! We're finishing up the test vehicle at the moment, looking forward to sharing more details once we've taken it for a spin :)

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

Thank you! We actually attended the launch of the Solar Impulse plane, what an amazing project. To answer your question about charging, we'll have the option to use DC fast charge (80% in under an hour) and plug into regular AC sockets (several hours, probably mostly overnight). Flexibility is...

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

Couldn't have said it better - no easy solutions! We're finding new challenges every day. But we also have breakthroughs every once in a while, which keeps us going. The solar rig consists of very light-weight flexible panels (not glass ones) which brings down the weight considerably. We will...

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

It does. But since we want to hit the road as soon as possible we need to use technology that's already readily available today. Who knows, maybe one day we'll build a fuel cell version :)

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

Hey, thanks! Here are more details about our concept, as it stands now: https://projectecarus.com/vehicle. The capacity of the solar rig will be 13 kw, consisting of light-weight panels that can be deployed flexibly. This will require some space, obviously, meaning we'll need to pick campsites...

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

Yep, we know this may not work. I suppose it all depends on how you define successful overlanding. We are looking to maximise autonomy, while minimising emissions. Which entails not just new technology, but also a new approach to travel. More time + more freedom = more adventure?

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

That's exactly it, we had to strike a balance between range and efficiency. At some point, the weight of the batteries offsets additional range they would bring, especially offroad. Also, though the Pinzgauer could carry a lot more weight, we also had to consider the cabin and the solar system...

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

It's all electric. We expect a range of over 200 km. You can check out more specs here: https://projectecarus.com/vehicle

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

Thanks for the offer! Though getting ourselves over to your neck of the woods may take a little while ;)

    Building a solar-powered off-road truck (based on a 712M Pinzgauer)

We wanted to let you guys know that we are currently developing a solar-electric Pinzgauer. Right now, Hannes and Francois Duez (of AVS, France, AKA tech mastermind behind the electric Pinz) are burning the midnight oil to start testing the first prototype as soon as possible. Once the base...
