Santa Clara Divide/San Francis Dam trip

Thanks to Mark for putting another great trip together. It was great to meet everyone. I just read up a little on the San Francis Dam. Looks like the remnants we were walking on were from the "west wing dike". We were wondering why it was all broken up. The article on wikipedia contains the...

    Downloading California Maps/DOQs from Casil

At the time when I needed this I didn't find a suitable program, so I wrote a little routine that did what I wanted. I would look into ftp clients that let you prepare queue's for download. My current favorite client is Smartftp. I've used it's queue feature before, but always copy and...

    Downloading California Maps/DOQs from Casil

I've used both http and ftp sites to download maps when I prepared my DVD sets. Depending on the site I've manually selected files in a ftp client or automated the download with a little program. You are dealing with large files, so things will take time and it does not all depend on you...

Newby here needs topo map advice

This question comes up every so often, so you may find some answers by searching previous posts. Here some comments: Generally GPS units use proprietary map formats and you have to use the software that goes with the GPS to get maps on the unit. For Garmin there are some ways to create your...

    Daypack recommendations?

After trying out everything in the local stores I went back to Adventure 16 and tried a different size of the Osprey Atmos 35. After walking around the store for 20min with 20lb it felt comfortable. So I went with it. Last Saturday Robb and I did some hiking in the Anza Borrego State park...

    Reviews of the Magellan Crossover.

I believe this was covered in the article by Chris Marzonie, not Mr. Sheppard.

Tom Sheppard's GPS article is wrong.

I'd probably call the elevation related explanation in the article quite incomplete (rather than outright wrong) since the time issue and ellipsoid correction are not mentioned. What bothered me when I first read the article is the repeated reference to cicrles rather than spheres and I...

    Expedition Trophy 2007

Al and I also passed the car in the creek and were wondering what happened.

How to repair a synthetic line in the field.

That was a very cool exercise, nice to have seen it actually done rather than just reading the instructions. Thanks for demonstrating it!

    Expedition Trophy 2007

It was really a great event all around, thanks everyone! Catching up with long time friends and putting new faces with screen names The classes were excellent! Camp really was a little Overland Society University Campus I could listen all day to Chuck telling me "I don't want to scare anybody...

    Daypack recommendations?

Those GoLite's sound interesting also, even though it appears that most packs are pretty light these days. The problem with getting a pack is that one really has to try it for fit. I went to Adventure 16 in Oceanside today and got my torso measurement in the process of checking out packs. I'm...

    Daypack recommendations?

Plenty of good suggestions, now if only I had a store close by that would stock more models. REI had the Gregory Z and Osprey Stratos, the Gregory they had didn't fit me, the Osprey felt good. I'll check Adventure 16 next week after the Trophy

    Daypack recommendations?

Thanks for the good suggestions so far, I'll investigate. That's exactly the problem and solution! Size requirement is an estimate, but on a hike like Saturday where temps change from hot to way below freezing (with wind chill) and one has to carry all the water/food for a day it quickly...

    Daypack recommendations?

My old, simple day pack has served me well for little day hikes until now. Yesterday, however, it showed it's limitations on a 9.5h hike. My shoulders are quite sore today. Since I want to do more of this type of hike I'm now looking for something new, more comfortable. I stopped by a store...

    Sleep/Cargo Platform Options

My setup is not as fancy as what others are showing, priority was for a nice sleeping surface. The setup is about 5lb lighter than the seats were. There are pics on this site. If you do end up sleeping in the truck than the rear window switch mod might be of interest.

    oziexplorer CE

I've only seen it on a friends PDA in the field once. It looked very good for soemthing on a tiny screen. I believe it was on one of those 640x400 color PDA's. One issue he had with the setup was that he somehow had to convert the regular USGS maps to the Ozi format before he could load them...

    Post your confluence

Yes, and document it with pictures. There are some uses besides just being fun: - Geography teachers like it. - There are some reseach groups who use it to verify remote sensing data. The pictures on the ground are more useful to them then Landsat images where there is still a lot of guessing...

    ExPo Radio Chat

You could look for repeaters in your area and see if you can hit them. Once you found a repeater you could post here and others in your area could check if they can get that repeater also. We've played with that a little down here in San Diego. Then there are linked repeaters. I've no...
