Is this why JLR are dropping Land Rover?

Hate to break it to you, it's been this way since the late 1990s. Land Rovers were always expensive, rare, and of those that sold in meaningful numbers, well-appointed.

Is this why JLR are dropping Land Rover?

JLR are not dropping Land Rover. JLR is the brand; they are differentiating between Jaguar, Land Rover, and Range Rover as sub-brands, and then simplifying model ranges within. You will still get a green oval and the words LAND ROVER on your vehicles.

when is it time to move on.

Portals are cool, but with air and independent suspension, do you really need them? They cost a lot in terms of efficiency and maintenance for frankly little gain in ground clearance on the new D7 architecture. The bottoms are flat anyway, no pumpkins, so raising the suspension on subframe lifts...

when is it time to move on.

TR2 and the low range gearbox are essentials IMO, but a locking rear diff isn't unless you plan on towing in deep snow or mud. Low range is good for the steep rocky/loose stuff (think San Juans/Ouray area or Mosca Pass), and the diesel plus Low Range makes it almost effortless. Red Noland JLR...

    No commentary needed....

Wow, I came here to mention that I saw one in Colorado Springs just the other day, and it looked cool, but dayum....this is worse than a Land Rover thread. But, people wanted a classic Defender clone, so....

when is it time to move on.

Can't emphasize enough that the key to any diesel engine's longevity is to drive it hard but take it easy. Long highway trips and offroad in low range - the stop-and-go will kill it. Source a diesel from the Western US except for LA or the Bay Area.

when is it time to move on.

My 2017 D5 Td6 has been utterly rock solid - I will drive it until the wheels fall off. 18" Compomotive wheels, 70-series tires, and Lucky8 rock sliders and she goes anywhere I point her. Can't beat the torque for offroading above 10,000 feet in Colorado. And 500 mile range on the Interstate...

In Praise of the Humble Rental Car

Rental cars are widely regarded as the fastest cars in the world. Once rally'd a late-90's Chevy Cavalier up Pike's Peak (when it was gravel), and liberally used parking-brake slides around corners on the downhill.

Functional differences between Discovery L462 and RRS L494

Also in the RRS, for a full sized spare you have to sacrifice even more cargo space as it requires a raised interior cargo floor cover, or you have to buy something like a Wilco Hitchgate tire carrier

Functional differences between Discovery L462 and RRS L494

The L494 and L462 are indeed the same platform, but the Defender L663 is beefed up a bit in strength appropriate to its more offroad focus. The L494 and L462 are both D7u, the Defender L663 is the D7x. The running gear in the RRS and D5 are the same. The chassis tuning and some options are...

Post pictures of your Land Rover.

Yeah that playa would have been fun in maybe late September / early October on those Pirellis. Unfortunately it wouldn't have mattered what kind of tires he was on in those conditions.

Air suspension, no rubbing at any height. No lift rods. The only slight issue is shoehorning the fully inflated full-size spare in the spare well under the back...took some doing.

Post pictures of your Land Rover.

Got the new Compomotive 18" wheels and 255/70-18 tires on my 2017 D5 HSE Td6 (no problem with the brakes...the wheels *juuuuust* fit), along with Lucky8 sliders and a front bash plate and some HI-yeller Baja Designs lights in the grille. Parked here at a pretty mellow trailhead but this thing...

Is this why JLR are dropping Land Rover?

I think it's been made pretty clear that the Green Oval and the words L A N D R O V E R will still appear on Defenders and Discoveries going forward. Same with Jaguar - the Leaping Cat and the word jaguar will still be seen on whatever it is they make these days. Rebranding Jaguar Land Rover...

    Gaia vs Onx

Gaia is nice in some ways because they offer Android Auto mirroring, which if you know how to use it well on your phone and have a newer vehicle with a decently sized display, then it will work pretty much the same on AA and you don't need to jerry-rig some tablet mount that will bounce all over...

    L405 Range Rover

The very first road trip I took in my D5 was deep into the Laramie Range in Wyoming for the solar eclipse in 2017...it was less than a month old. Not another soul in sight. On the way out, we found ourselves behind a brand new temp-tagged full size Range Rover Autobiography, clambering over the...

    This truck is unbelievable good

Absolutely - for short stop/go trips, school runs, etc Turbodiesels in general don't work well because they never warm up the downpipe sufficiently to self-clean. A good once per week interstate run in manual mode keeping the RPM's above ~3K for about 20 minutes will generally keep them clean. I...

    This truck is unbelievable good

Look for any D5 with TR2. Those came with low range, but not necessarily a rear locker. the only way to get the rear locker on the D5 Td6 was by getting the 7-seat option, and then you forego the full-sized spare and have to accept the higher weight and slightly reduced cargo volume. I've never...

    This truck is unbelievable good

My 2017 D5 HSE Td6 is rock solid at a hair over 70,000 miles and I still love driving it every day. Summer A/T's are going on soon, maybe upgrading wheels to some Compomotive PD1881's, but we'll see. About to get its second set of brake pads, aftermarket rotors from its first brake job are...
