Is there a concern that by attaching the front of the shell to the vertical you will now transfer body torque loads into the shell and crack it at those self tapping screw locations? Maybe thats why they left it as a "soft joint".

Maybe that's a Tacoma thing but FRP bolted mine directly to/through the bed (but I have a steel bed on my Silverado). But the foam they use will NOT last even one trip down the Mojave Road. Ask me how I know this!

It seems like a descent size RTT with inside ladder annex would be the solution. Two bunk cots in the annex would sleep all four kids "downstairs" and if in the future you kick the kids out into a separate tent the bunk cots would still fit that bill too.
