Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

It is interesting, entertaining, and in some cases frustrating how much you learn after having completed a build. I put 4.56 gears in the truck because I had them and everyone seems to think it is a good ratio for off road crawling. However, given 35" tires and the gear ratios in a NV4500...

Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

As a bit of an update, I have been using a mechanical speedometer rear tail housing in the Atlas II transfer case. The reason for this is that when I started the build, I did not know what I do now. I used a Dakota Digital 128k sender to get a 40 pulse per revolution signal to go to the ECU...

Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

I managed to make it out to Tuscarora State Forest the other day. It was hot during the day but got down into the high 60's at night. It was a quick trip, but nice to get away. Campsite 70 (40°13'31.1"N 77°35'44.3"W or 40.225300, -77.595630) is just fine. It was maybe 10 or so degrees...

It's good you guys made it back with an integer number of trucks, rather than a fraction like last time.

Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

We took the time to go to Toroweap Overlook. It is a drive to get there, but well worth the time and effort. We stayed at Tuweep Campground, which is right next to the overlook. The last few miles of trail is a bit rocky, but not bad at all. I lack the facility with words necessary to...

Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

We stayed one night at Jumpup Cabin, which was a nice change. One can rent the cabin for $35 or so. There are trails to hike as well. There is a nice look out point roughly 5 miles from the cabin that few know about.

Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

We stopped along the way to see the Great Sand Dunes National Park. It is a strange sight indeed to see sand, mountains, and snow all together. We stayed at the lodge there since there seemed to be no sites available at the camp ground. I awoke to find this in the morning. We had little...

Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

I guess I should provide an update on the pull out kitchen. I recently got back from a two week trip to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. It was roughly 5,500 miles in total...and I won't even mention the fuel costs. It was a fabulous trip. Here is a shot of the kitchen in action. And...

Thanks for the compliments. Who knows, maybe I'll have the build completed in a few more years.

Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

I finally got the rims/wheels I ordered ages ago painted and mounted on the truck. These are DOT approved double bead locked Hutchinson Rock Monster rims. The tires are 35" BFG KM3's on 17" rims. I had the outside half rim color matched and painted with PPG base/clear. The tires are...

Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

I have a disk brake conversion on a 14 bolt axle in the back of the truck. I first tried a driveline brake, which didn't work. Then I tried a couple versions of Eldorado mechanical brakes, which didn't work at all. Recently Wilwood introduced an electronic brake kit that I installed on the...

Is this what they mean by stump pulling torque?

K5 Camper. My offroad home away from home.

There are some good options for the 4x6" size headlamp (Morimoto or JW Speaker). However, they are not cheap by any means. I have the Morimoto and they are just great. I also added separately fused larger gauged wire and relays to lessen current draw on the factory light circuit. The K5 is...

    Project "Autonomous" F-350

I just recently bought an electronic parking brake kit from Wilwood. The kit is for 1.25" rotors but I will have to build a bracket to hold the caliper. The Wilwood kit is spendy, but I tried a pinion brake (Atlas transfer case) and it had very limited holding power. The Eldorado calipers I...

And some pictures of the aluminum tank, just for reference. Don't mind the top...a smidge of drama might have been encountered. The access port allows for the service of the pump. I welded some 3/8" tube for lack of space above the tank or an appropriate fitting. The bung to the left...

It looks like the only thing left to do with this project is to test it in the field. Here is the tie down point for bolting to the truck bed.

Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

Here is a shot of the kitchen pulled all the way out. I also changed the faucet to one that contains an electric switch that turns on the pump. The cabinet turned out okay. The fill port for the water tank (8 gallons) is visible left of the cabinet as well as the 5 lb propane tank. I...

Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

I decided to rework the water tank and build another out of aluminum, so it has taken some time. Given the size and noise generated by the water pump, I decided to use an in-tank pump instead and make the tank a bit bigger. I finally got the shroud back from the place with a big press brake.
