My Camping / Rooftop Tent Trailer Build

I'll post up some more info, including parts used, when I get a chance at work. I pieced together a few different ideas for this one. Its It's honestly super easy and relatively inexpensive, with the exception that I bought a brand new ac unit from Walmart for $119. Sent from my SM-N960U using...

My Camping / Rooftop Tent Trailer Build

Had an amazing 10 day trip with the family. We covered 1735 miles driving from Nashville Tn to Fort Desoto, south of Tampa Fl, then up to Tampa for a day to meet up with our friends, then over to the east coast to camp on the north side of St. Augustine at north beach campground, back home. The...

My Camping / Rooftop Tent Trailer Build

More progress!! We hit the road in less than 48hrs. My wife has been working crazy hours. So, I've not been able to get much time in until my son goes to bed.. thankfully, I use to work some night shifts. So, my body still has some memories of operating on 2-3hrs of sleep each day.. lol So I...

My Camping / Rooftop Tent Trailer Build

I wasn't tired after I got my son laid down for bed. So, out to shed I went! Got my switch panel and the enclosure finished and ready to wire up. Tomorrow I will figure out exactly where I want to mount it and get it wired up and ready to plug into the panel. Then it's just a matter of pulling...

My Camping / Rooftop Tent Trailer Build

This afternoon I knocked a few more items on my never ending list. Figured out how I wanted to mount the battery tray and got it painted. Next up I got my battery kill switch mounted along with my 120v ac power pass through connector installed for the battery charger. After that I started...

    Trailer Brakes?

Not 100% sure. If I remember correctly, the brake flange mount to hub face distance on most dexter 3500's with the 10x2.5" drum is 6". Your axle tube has to have a brake flange to be able to run the backing plate that the drum slides over. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

    Trailer Brakes?

Yeah, super easy. Worse case you might need to pack with grease and install 2 bearings, install a seal cap on the back of the hub, and install the drum/hubs on the spindle. Easy to do and good to learn, for future maintenance, if you haven't done it before. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

    Trailer Brakes?

I agree with you 100%! I mentioned that very detail in my original comment. Hell, just being on slick wet roads is reason enough in my book. I just see a ton of people responding in threads like these saying, "I pull my xyz trailer that's thousands of pounds and never needed brakes!" I've towed...

    Trailer Brakes?

Trailer brakes, legally, are usually not required in most states on a single axle under 2500-3500lbs. That being said, I absolutely love having brakes on my trailer and opted for a specific backing plate that has a manual parking brake feature built into the brake system. I've pull my trailer...

My Camping / Rooftop Tent Trailer Build

See my first response above. The axle is proper width now. We want to run the factory jeep wheels that match our jeep. You can't run the factory wheels without spacer due to a clearance issue with the trailer axle grease cap. I had matching wheels for my Tahoe prior to these. The tahoe/Silverado...

My Camping / Rooftop Tent Trailer Build

A 1.5" spacer plus a factory jeep wheel creates the same offset as most commonly used aftermarket wheels, around 4.5-4.75" back spacing. So the leveraging effect wouldn't be much different than running an aftermarket wheel. You definitely have to be careful with spacers. The bolts holding the...

My Camping / Rooftop Tent Trailer Build

My current axle width is very close to the same track width as the jeep. Unfortunately, the spacers are needed to allow the hub grease cap room to tuck behind the center bore of the jeep wheel. The center bore of the factory jeep wheel is about 2-3mm to small for the grease cap to poke through...

My Camping / Rooftop Tent Trailer Build

Progress has been made. Current axle has been converted over to 5x5 hubs. I ran into an issue that my spidertrax spacer center bore was was to small to fit over the trailer hub. Did some measuring and figured out that a 2 3/4 whole saw would give me about 1mm of clearance over the thickest part...

My Camping / Rooftop Tent Trailer Build

Well, as camping season approaches, the trailer build/evolution continues. I've been tinkering with it a little over the last few weeks, I moved the rack legs back to better support the majority of the weight. That prompted me to finally bite the bullet and order some 150lb/lift linear...

My Camping / Rooftop Tent Trailer Build

Thankfully the hard part is figured out and the info has been share, on how to build/baffle the shroud. I have the perfect spot for the unit on my rack, in the cargo basket. It will allow me to have a pretty short feed and return line. We just camped last weekend, mid 90's during the day. Just...

    Troubling issue with 05 tahoe

I have an 05 Tahoe as well. It does great off-road and in ice and snow. It's a must to disable the stabilitrac or the wheel spin nanny robs all your power. If you don't have the traction control button, 4hi and 4lo will disable it. Any steep hill accents or decents I use 4lo almost every time...

Dexter 3500lb axle, let's talk brakes!

Yeah, that's what I needed to do and after about 50 miles of driving, they settled in and I had to turn my controller all the way down to like 2.1-2.3 to not get tire lock up. Figuring out that setting was quite funny. 265 AT tires are loud as hell when they lock up! I've had some people look...
