To build or not to build 2024 Sierra 3500 Single cab

Only question I’d have is why the pass through? On vans it’s easy, but trucks pass through is only good for dogs and small kids unless you like yoga and caving in small spaces. Plus if you for some reason don’t love your build, you still have an unadulterated truck without a hole in it.

    FJ Truck-camper-like Idea...

At your height, guessing you weigh 200lbs? Add gear, water, camper and you're quickly bumping into the 1200lb payload capacity. Probably would have to add airbags to not be dragging ass on fire roads. Also, might be hard to stay under 400lbs. Weight adds up quick both in builds, and just...

2022 Ford F550 - DIY - Adventure Expedition Vehicle Build Thread

I'm going with 2300lbs complete, but no water, food, bedding. Either way, that 550 is going to be chill to drive and nowhere near GVWR which will obviously be awesome.

2022 Ford F550 - DIY - Adventure Expedition Vehicle Build Thread

With such a light build with carbon interior/exterior I can't imagine you'll be anywhere near GVWR when this project is rolling down the road. I know it's hard to estimate, but it's hard to imagine the camper finished weighing more than 3,000lbs dry?

    Welcome to the 10-year club

^^there are so many $400,000+ rigs with less than 20,000 miles on them for sale, makes you wonder.

    Welcome to the 10-year club

Congratulations. Problem with ten year club is a lotta folks who build their own end up repeating the process sooner than ten years because many just like the process. Some are horrified by it and never do it again. Your build remains a top favorite of mine for many reasons. The wood use is one...

Thanks for replies. I figured they did fine. Was considering a DIY soft side build in the future. Nice to hear from real world use.

How do the soft sides do in winter? Propane or diesel heat?

Almost a year out of chemo, full remission with great prognosis. Minimal side effects, still cycling, skiing, hiking, athletic. Some nuances to health, but alive and enjoying life with family. Lives on the truck. That way you use it more.

Older pics before bathroom was done and the seal between upper/lower done. Pretty basic 1" and 2" XPS foam with a very light skin of fiberglass/epoxy. Electric actuators raise top. 22" for 6'5" height. Diesel heater, 12v fridge, shower, 25g water, no grey/black tank. Two 24" wide beds plus...

    Two weeks in the desert

Two weeks bouncing around the desert with family in popular and less-popular places with a DIY pop up camper that managed great over hundreds of miles of pretty rough terrain.

Just a 7.5x8’ box on a DIY flatbed. Camper is hard side pop up 2” and 1” XPS laminated fiberglass/epoxy. Camper plus flatbed only weighs 500lbs more than stock truck and is 2,000lbs under GVWR. Three beds, shower, toilet, stove, sink, diesel heater. Electric actuators lift top 22” for 6’4”...

My $4,000 DIY hard side pop up just rallied White Rim supporting six cyclists carrying 400lbs water and a ton of gear for everyone. Stoked on the simpleton build. Earthroamer wouldn’t fit here…

    StoryTeller Overland GXV Hilt

Exactly. These 550 builds are ridiculously huge, and once they get stuck, are irretrievable by most.

RexRover... another 1/2 ton based big luxury overland camper rig (F150) for $350k

It looked like failure and massive buckling on the cab/camper interface as well on the "Ascender", which ironically, could not ascend. I'd be hesitant to buy any of their builds until they had some proven background and real people using them. The Ascender looked like an utter failure on many...
