Why did you choose your specific pop-up camper?

Went with a Phoenix, after looking long and hard at a FWC Grandby. I wanted a bit more customized options than FWC was willing to do, and I was really impressed with the roof raising mechanism on the Phoenix. The roof mechanism was a big deal to me after living with a Starcraft for many years...

    Recomendations for offroad tough appliaces?

If you are leaning towards cooktop only, you might consider something you can use indoors and out, like TernOverland said above. My current favorite is a Cook Partner, all stainless two burner. You could set it into a recess in your counter, and just haul it outside when you want to cook under...

    Going out Solo, Recovery options.

I've always gone solo a lot here in the PNW. You would be surprised what you can use as a winch anchoring point. I've winched out of snow and mud using really big boulders, sage bushes, and buried survey markers. I used to carry a big Danforth anchor in my old jeep, but I only ever used it once...

    New to hunting

Oklahoma has pretty good bird hunting, if that excites you at all. Kansas and Colorado are even better. Of course, that means another firearm and more training and preparation.

    Any bird hunters?

Heading out on Saturday morning, going to central South Dakota for pheasants. Not exactly an overland trip, but lots of mud roads after we get there. Last year the Phoenix on the F350 did great in that slippery mud.

    Starcraft pine mountain starmate

I had what appears to be the same model as jrod, a 1998. I bought it brand new. It was a fantastic camper for my young family, but the construction quality was not very good. The fabric portion let in a lot of wind and dust. The top leaked in storage and let part of the front overhang rot. In...

    1017a camper/tiny house buIld

What did you decide on for a cooking stove? I lived aboard a sailboat for 3 years with an Origo fibre mat stove. It never failed me, but it smelled bad when cooking and the heat was not hot enough for some big pots of water and the like. I sailed on a big ketch out of Anacortes for a year, that...

    Dogs traveling in camper?

This is a huge flashpoint topic, lots of potential for harsh words and recrimminations. We had a hard-side camper on my dad's truck for 15 years, with a regular cab, and for long distance hunting trips there was no way we were putting 3 big men and one 110lb woman in the cab, let alone two 60lb...

    2005 F-450 4x4 Utility Body w/ Starcraft Pine Mountain Lonestar Pop-top Camper

I bought the same Renogy setup. So far I've only used it in the equipment yard, topping up truck and trailer batteries. I hope to get some "real world" experience with it before Labor Day.

What do you use for a truck gun?

I generally have a Ruger Red Label 12 ga. behind the back seat of my crew cab. There are few close-range problems that a load of double-ought won't fix, and TWO loads of double-ought take care of most of those. My dad prefers a Stevens 223./20 ga. combo over and under. He likes the rifle option...

    Need winch advice

Almost always either winching somebody else out or doing something the manufacturor doesn't recommend, like skidding logs or winching dead vehicles up onto rollon trailers.

    Any bird hunters?

I was doing a little bit of habitat restoration work a couple of weekends ago, with the Forest Service and the Ruffed Grouse Society. We had a couple of birds flush on our way in to our project, and heard some drumming while we were there. It appears our efforts are bearing fruit, or else it's...

My Taco Phoenix Pop Up Camper

After a bit over a year, my results are mixed. The basic design is awesome, it really works for my kid and I, or GF and I, or even all three of us. It's hard to find a camper under 11' that will sleep two really tall guys comfortably (the boy and I are both over 6'3"). The extra tall, oversize...

What do you store your camper on?

I have a plywood platform that looks a lot like Topher's. My old Bigfoot is currently stored on it. My new (a year old now) Phoenix is just sitting on it's jacks, I am considering buying one of those inexpensive trailers to store it on. My brother has his popup stored that way, and it's great...

    Power for tablet

A second vote for the Blue Seas dual 2.1 amp port. I have now installed 3 of these, one in the truck, one in the pop-up camper, and one in the jet boat. I am selling the jet, so I will be putting the Blue Seas ports into the remaining boats this Summer. Foolproof, they charge everything.

    Trailer lid

I went to my local sheet metal shop and had them brake and weld up a 5x8 solid 20 ga. lid for my old dog trailer. It's still waterproof and working 19 years later. I put a turned-down hem all the way around, about 1", and put all fasteners through that hem so there is nothing on the top itself...

    Camper Tie Downs

I have a 9' 6" camper on a 8' bed, and most of my trailers will tow without an extension. I use a 12" extension for one of our boats, and a utility trailer that has a particularly short "A" at the front. Jeep flat tows fine with no extension, and most flatbeds are fine. After a lot of messing...

    Camper Tie Downs

For 1400 lbs, or even 2k like you say for safety, I think you could add "D" rings to the inside box and use heavy duty ratchet straps. Most of the 2" ones are rated for more than 2000 lbs EACH, and you'd be using 4 of them. This assumes your Ram has cargo tiedown rings at all four corners...

    Flat bed camper for sale

I think there is a pretty good market out there for a partially built kit type camper, or something you can fit out yourself as time, money, and skills allow. It sure seems to work for FWC, with their shells. I'm not sure, but I think judging from the ones you see everywhere that they sell more...

    Flat bed camper for sale

Good luck with the sale, Jeff. I can't wait to see what you build next. Your slightly used camper would sure look good on one of my F450's from work, but I just dropped 30k on a camper a year ago and can't justify doing it again this fast. Plus, I would have to retire one from the fleet, none of...
