Some squarebody pics. We can't stop collecting these trucks, each one is different in its own way. The military one is a 88 1500 with 2500 strength upgrades, full solar panels on roof giving 11 amps charge in full sun for the freezer fridge and ancillaries, 491,000 miles. The garnet and...

It's great to see two of the same in the driveway. One Classic, fixed up vehicle is a historical display, two or more is a Vintage car show! :)

Thanks! The high altitude was a challenge to keep the paint from flashing off too quickly (we are at 7000 feet altitude). Also, we got rid of the chrome look on the front grille and the wheels by painting it with the HotRod brand Smoke color paint, which we also painted the other military...

Yes, it has barn doors, Our other 91 suburban also has barn doors... I like the barn doors better than the tailgate style. just has a more retro vibe, and for our uses, a lot easier to allow ease of access to the rear when camping/ mineral exploring. We also just restored and painted out 91...

My 88 Travelquest Recon. On our lot where we will build our Log cabin in Big Bear Ca. It's dirty with that "snow country" patina of dirt that is only seen in areas of dirty snow roads. Just installed the traction tracks, after getting stuck in mud on a trail nearby. Frozen earth drives great...

Siping your own tires for ice/snow

That is true, our local tire shop up here will do that as well, but the number of sipe edges you get (the actual part of the siping that does the actual work on ice type surfaces) is 1/10th the amount of channeling the small waffle pattern I did. (each lug now has about 15 linear inches of the...

Siping your own tires for ice/snow

Ye, I was careful to only go down about 2mm (roughly the thickness of a pencil lead). I read that most of the work is being done by the edges of each cut, not deep down. Since I did this, I have driven a couple of thousand miles on dry los angeles freeways, so they are starting to disappear...

Snow Chains... what are you using?

Everyone vacationing up in Big Bear Ca seem to buy cables. Probably because they are cheaper. I can't tell you how many rescues/road clearances I have assisted in pulling vehicles off the right of way (blocking all traffic) because they got their cables wrapped around their axles, tearing out...

Siping your own tires for ice/snow

Hey all, I have now lived through a couple winters in Big Bear Ca, and have found that the M/T tires don't do so well/very poor in black ice and slush. So, I finally decided to sipe my own tires, with a grid pattern that would increase my traction on icy surfaces. I used a dremel and a...

No Politics: This Is Why Electric Vehicles Won't Work In The Long Run

Yes, eventually is good, and something to look forward to, but "wins hands down" on something that isn't actually here yet, but extrapolated to come, with some as yet uninvented necessary tech improvement in energy storage tech necessary to bring to fruition does not have real world usefulness...

No Politics: This Is Why Electric Vehicles Won't Work In The Long Run

Name me your EV of choice to do Utah canyonlands that is superior in any way to traditional gas off road vehicles who have to go out and spend time in areas that there is no charging stations for a week at a time..... "hands down" means this should be a very easy answer.

    Steampunk

If the upper cushion had been reversed (shaped like a square ring with the hole negative, those seats really really look like a lot of ww2 US fighter seats. The reverse cutout would have been for the pilots parachute, which hung out behind his butt, and became part of the "seat" when he was...

Is chevs new "toolbox" ad accurate?

Big difference between aluminum and steel is that steel can be bent back into shape, while Aluminum, when it bends, permanently alters the molecular cohesion at the damage point. Ask any auto body guy what they have to do to "repair" a dented Aluminum body panel... Steel, bang into place...

No Politics: This Is Why Electric Vehicles Won't Work In The Long Run

Now, if we could just perfect UHP storage for compressed metallic hydrogen, then that really WOULD be the white Swan of tech to power our globe in virtual perpetuity, with orbital solar collectors beaming down directed MW to collectors. I am a huge fan of hard SF, and it's only a matter of time...

No Politics: This Is Why Electric Vehicles Won't Work In The Long Run

Many military analysts think that the next big wars will be fought over rare earth metals resource zones. There is currently a shortage, and the processing gets harder as ore yield rates lower, as the easy stuff is being currently mined. Kind of like gold mines, where the low hanging fruit is...

No Politics: This Is Why Electric Vehicles Won't Work In The Long Run

Mythbusters showed something like that going through an airplane. To resist an impact, you'd need like a 1/4" lexan shield. I'd think. I do know that there are protective coverings over PV panels to shield from impact damage, but I don't think a 3-4 pound sugar pine cone falling from 80 feet...

No Politics: This Is Why Electric Vehicles Won't Work In The Long Run

Problem is that to tie into the power grid to then use shared transmission, you also now have to pay prorated costs of the entire grid use and power supply. You cannot as an individual house use "your portion of a grid farm" that enters into the grid, if it is powering more than the end users...
