What are the better tent stakes for soft sand?

Similar to the grocery bag idea… We always have snow chains on board, and carry them in canvas bags with handles. They work great as anchors for canopys/shades. Either use as is and tie to the handles, or empty, use the chains themselves and/or fill bags with dirt/sand/whatever.

Unimog composite camper, should I put rubber between the composite shell and the subframe

You are the only one talking about removing any skin. If you are too ignorant to realize how such a simple bolt-thru assembly can be fastened without removing skin, I cannot help you. BTW, this was 2 weeks ago.... And a few days after this we had near 50mph cross winds that rolled multiple...

Opinions on Ram 2500 wheel and tire options 285's vs 255's; Baja Boss vs something less aggressive

Moving to an 18" wheel will provide a much better selection, as you have found. It is the entire reason we did exactly that, pushing from the factory 17's to a solid set of 18's It also provides the option for the high payload (4080lb) sizes, though it doesn't sound like you need such a tire as...

Unimog composite camper, should I put rubber between the composite shell and the subframe

Done right, it doesnt take huge hardware to work and survive. Our camper is mounted (and designed to dismount) using receivers integrated into the flatbed rail. The camper side is a self aligning assembly that is bonded/glued and thru-bolted to the camper floor, with a few bolts that also thru...

    Welcome to the 10-year club

We just finished up a 19 day 4500 mile trip to Texas (primarily for the 2024 total eclipse) Both the truck and camper took some hits, nothing major. And everything performed as intended/designed. These trips always show what changes/upgrades we can make, and this one is no exception. I have a...

BFG MT vs Falken Wildpeak AT4: Sidewall Toughness

The Toyo AT2 and new AT3 should certainly be added to the list. We currently have 35k on our set of AT2s and if we didnt live in snow country, we would likely get another 25k out of this set. Instead, we will likely swap them out in another 8-10k. Absolutely incredible to me given what they...

    Lifting jack

We run a shorty 12t bottle jack. Just short enough to slip under an axle with a flat tire.

Fortunately the initial stuck was nearly flat/level. The terrible off camber wasnt until mid-extraction.

Why the big price difference between flatbed and slide-in??

Tough to say the markup is justified, but comparing a traditional TC to a flatbed TC, the space and comfort alone is worth the consideration. Built properly, the COG is lower and balance L-R and front-rear can be managed better. Ours, well beyond the 10-year mark of being built, is proof...

    Mid-size vs Full-size truck setup

Because the majority of us know how utterly useless an 6.5’ box is…. and wonder why would you even consider the lack of “towing mirrors” a hold up 🤣

When you hit northern NV during a whiteout, 200%+ precip spring and misjudge a turnout. 1-2” of crust with bottomless soup underneath. A. moment after coming to a stop we sunk to the axles. After failing self recovery efforts, we called for assistance. Spent the night, had some local help...

    Welcome to the 10-year club

Ive had quite a few request interior shots of our camper. We are prepping for our next trip currently, and the camper received a deep clean. Figured it was as good a time as ever for some photos. Besides the two back cushions that the wife (finally) finished, hey, wats a 10-year delay...

An incident worth talking about. Kinetic Recovery Accident.

Trust has a whole lot to do with it. And I'm one that has serious trust issues. Combine that with being a bit old-school, I'm surprised an incident like this hasn't surfaced sooner. Kinetic pulls in so many ways make my hair stand on end. Hopefully this reels in a lot of folks that carry...

Which side are shore power and water hookups usually, driver or passenger? Do camp spots have a standard?

Also keep in mind that you may want to park the opposite direction, if it isnt a pull-thru site. The few times that we use a campground, Im typically backed in, to isolate us just that much more from any passer-by.

Lighten that load. Recovery gear, snow chains, flatbed decking....

We operate almost exclusively in the PNW, and a bunch in winter, so some sort of traction aids like chains is not only required by law at times, but a good fall back when actually needed. We weigh near 12k lbs. While Id love to think a smaller winch than what have might save a good deal of...
