    SRW 450 Mountain Build

I had a local builder build a hinged bed using ford and Australian truck department of transportation (whatever they call it) reccomendations, not pivot frame and not phoenix (who I think subs this out) see build blog GOVE. Pivot frames push your center of gravity up and frequent damage the...

    SRW 450 Mountain Build

The tire upgrade will put extra stress on brakes all around and everything that moves in the front end. There are good after market replacements for ball joints and the unit bearings - do that as part of your tire upgrade. Also consider upgading the power steering pump (maybe replace stock...

Options for round the country trip.

For the size you want you need class 5 at least and not a camper unless you custom build which won't be in your budget. Used 4x4 Class C motorhome seems like a good fit - They are hard to find but for sure around. Pickup with trailer adds some flexibility. In usa tall and wide is just fine...

GOVE Global Overland Vehicle Economical build.

While in Switzerland a fellow Overlander (Saurer 2dm 1968 Expeditionmobile build), who lives near our camp stopped by and we talked for a long time. His build was at his home so the next morning we stopped by and took some pictures.

GOVE Global Overland Vehicle Economical build.

Well, we've been on the road since December of 2017 spending 5.5 months in Mexico, returned to the USA for a month and made some updates and got rid of stuff that didn't work well in Mexico. here is a list: Left the inflatable kayaks at home. Mexico was the ideal place to use them and we...

    Supersingles on Dana 19030S?

Ok call me dumb but how about making your build 7' wide? You would be close to centered over the flange....

Not to sound like a smartass but - Yes the US constitution right to privacy. Fourth Amendment.

    Vaults and Safes in Camper

For sure borders - even the USA - are open season and can ask and inspect without probable cause.

    Vaults and Safes in Camper

In the USA a warrant is required to search your car (or you) unless they have reasonable suspicions (Don't remember the technical term). So police in the USA cannot search your vehicle. Also you don't have to answer any of their questions - Other than license and registration. BTW Who would...

BeefCake's build...a roll your own Earthroamerish family expo rig

Looking good! You might be a bit longer than my GOVE f550 build. keeping mass forward will help because you could end up with rear of the truck causing some nasty swinging. And those tires will be great off road but they allow a lot of movement from side to side when you are at freeway speeds.

    Frame flex question

Yes. Though i understand your concern about the weight of the camper being pushed to the downhill side during flex, you can see in my photo above that is true. My 2-point system keeps the load spread across the entire length of the truck frame rather than focusing the mass at 2 attachment...

    Frame flex question

lostih if you attach a frame with hinge points near the cab then the camper could potentially hit the truck cab when the truck frame twists.

    Frame flex question

wow lostih that is bad. I certainly would not put a camper on there. clearly the bed is fixed pretty tightly to the frame just behind the cab and the frame is at risk to break there. I hinged my bed ONLY at the end of the frame (call it a 2 point system with full frame contact) and the bed can...

    Frame flex question

I agree with IdaSHO and would add if you are not an engineer do NOT attach rigidly, or use 3 or 4 point articulation, nor shorten nor lengthen the frame. Do what the manufacturer of your truck recommends - and some common sense if you can find any.

Got the start for my 550 build

FYI it is polyisocyanurate that killed soo many in Britain this summer and is now banned in brit buildings http://www.foxnews.com/world/2017/06/18/grenfell-tower-cladding-is-banned-in-uk-government-says.html not sure I'd use it in a camper I built (though it is in mine as well.)

Dirt worthy wheel and tire options for heavier campers

For a 550 (and I assume 450) if you go bigger than 36 to 36.5 (depending on width) you'll either need to lift, set the wheels way out, and probably serious modification of the wheel well. with an E450 I doubt you have that kind of room.

Dirt worthy wheel and tire options for heavier campers

My Rickson experiences, too bad because they occasionally do a good work. http://forum.expeditionportal.com/threads/84721-GOVE-Global-Overland-Vehicle-Economical-build?p=1435284#post1435284

Dirt worthy wheel and tire options for heavier campers

I have an F-550 loaded to 19,000 lbs. I'm 7' wide so duals don't work. Finding a tire that would handle that load, fit on my 550 with minimal modification, have reasonable mileage, have global availability, and survive bad roads was a challenge. I choose 295/60r22.5x9.00. Specifically Michelin...
